09/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: One of my favorite artists is now also one of my favorite dogs! Our Picasso is big, boisterous and so much fun, there’s nothing abstract about his love for ball games and belly rubs and during our time together we enjoyed plenty of both. Whether doling out kisses or hunkering down on the bench to mouth (but never destroy) his toys, there is always something of the lovable clown about him and his facial expressions never fail to make me smile. Seriously, could there be anything funnier than watching a wrinkly-faced dog pick up and attempt to carry around two tennis balls at once? Picasso knows how to sit politely to wait for treats or the ball and though he does pull strongly on leash at first, once in a harness he’s actually a very good walker and seems to be quite house trained too. Life in a kennel is really not for him and his ideal family would be just as snuggly yet adventurous as he is, keen to get out and explore but equally happy to pile onto the couch for a good cuddle session every night. Picasso performed well on his behavior assessment and would make a truly unique (not to mention gorgeous!) addition to almost any active, dog-savvy family. Don’t miss the chance at a modern doggie masterpiece, take home your very own Picasso today!
08/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Picasso was brought in as a stray by police. He was social upon intake. He jumped up to greet staff by licking, accepting treats from admissions counselor’s hands. He entered SAFER assessment room high energy, panting. Picasso allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, panting, body soft. He displayed a lot of high energy and movement during Sensitivity item, wiggly body, tail wagging, getting closer to the assessor. Picasso was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, hard jumping up on assessor at end. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licking assessor’s hand on second attempt, tail wagging. At times Picasso paced and jumped onto assessment chair. He required a lot of pressure to remove his head from the Food bowl, consistently eating quickly in a frenzied pace with big gulps. Picasso was very focused on Toy, keeping a firm grip with a loose body, requiring trade up to relinquish. He would not focus on Rawhide, still focused on where the Toy had gone. Once redirected, he was very intent on eating the Rawhide, snatching at it any time assess-a-hand approached. Off leash with other dogs, Picasso greets briefly but then wanders the pen a bit anxious. The Behavior Team feel Picasso would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. Any older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. Picasso may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners, body awareness and focus in regards to jumping up and mouthing, as well as the command drop it and trade up games. He may benefit from daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct any anxiousness and high energy. Look: 2.
