A volunteer writes: Oh Petey Bear!!! True to his breed (American Bulldog) Petey is a goof ball complete with magic marker stains above his eye from playing with a magic marker, that he retrieved from the garbage. Petey came to the shelter as a stray and has not been reclaimed. Petey Bear is a friendly outgoing dog who knows how to sit and give paw. Petey gets really excited when you approach his kennel because he loves going for walks; once outside he demonstrates that he is house broken and is happy to play fetch or just explore his new surroundings. While playing, Petey Bear enjoys rolling over on his toy to hide it from me and then acting “surprised” when he finds it again. TOTAL GOOF BALL!!! If you’re looking for a fun playful new friend look no further Petey Bear is ready and waiting.
A staff member writes: Handsome and friendly Petey Bear came to us as a stray and he is well socialized with people so we believe he was with someone that give him some training. He is playful and outgoing with all staff and volunteers and does get along with dogs but tends to mount females and needs correction. Petey Bear would benefit with a trainer and placing him in a foster ASAP is needed
SAFER – EXPERIENCED
Petey Bear came to us as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was extremely friendly, loose, wiggly body during intake, allowing all handling, but a bit mouthy. Petey Bear pulled very hard on his relief walk, constantly grabbing leash to tug. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body wiggly, tail wag. He stood still and accepted the touch, body soft, tail wag. Petey Bear was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, focused on other stimuli and in constant motion. He gently pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He calmly allowed the Food bowl to be moved and lifted his head when assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. Petey Bear playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip and loose body. He took Rawhide away, body loose. Petey Bear approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears forward, tail above spine level, lip lick. The Behavior Team feels Petey Bear would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners as well as body awareness and focus. Currently he should only be walked by an adult who can handle his hard pulling and may benefit from a harness. Petey Bear would benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as nylabones and kongs to positively direct his high energy and enthusiasm.
Look: 1. Eyes averted, with tail wagging and body wiggly. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek.
Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip lick.
GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Petey Bear was loose and wiggly when greeting a female though the play gate. He rushes in the yard and exhibits assertive behavior, he begins to mount and vocalize. When corrected by handlers Petey Bear did not respond and was very persistent.
