A volunteer writes:
Petey came into our center as an owner surrender citing a new baby in the home and Petey guarding Food and toys in the past. It is reported that in the past Petey would bite if a hand approached and tried to stop him from getting into something he shouldn’t (garbage, candy, etc) but this has not happened in several months. Owner reports Petey has lived with adults and teenagers, does not get along with strangers and sometimes gets along with children. Owner reports Petey does not like other animals. It is reported Petey is housebroken. Petey was nervous and tense for his initial medical exam, resisted handling. Petey was a bit nervous and flinched when attempting to leash, but allowed with a slow approach. He was focused on the exit door when in the SAFER assessment room. Petey allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body cautious, lip lick. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears and tail neutral, open mouth. Petey followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licking assessor’s hand. Petey showed no interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs Petey is avoidant and tense throughout the interaction. Petey has bitten over food in the past, and for that reason we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is cautious, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands, lip lick.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, mouth open.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft
Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw. Dog may lick hand.
Toy 1: No interest.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Petey is avoidant and tense throughout the interaction.
