SAFE – 04/23/15
Its not clear how young Petey ended up in a cage at Brooklyn ACC. But it is clear that this young, healthy boy is wondering where his world went. Its also clear that no one has come to get Petey and ACC now proposes to end his stay with them by putting Petey on tomorrow’s euthanasia list. Tonight, Petey is hoping against hope that somebody sees him among the sea of dogs around him and that someone just knows he’d be a wonderful addition to their household. He’s ready to fine tune all those manners just like any other pup his age; he’s ready to follow his new human around and explore his new home and neighborhood; he’s ready to be wanted. If you’re ready for a gorgeous new young bff for years to come, start working on fostering or adopting Petey. But don’t delay—at noon tomorrow, Petey will be ever so happy to get out of that cage he’s been in 24 x 7 but too late, he will realize that this time he won’t return.

04/08/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Petey was brought in as a stray so his past behavior in a home is unknown. During SAFER Petey was a bit shy when entering the assessment room, but he approached the assessor with a loose body posture and a tail wag. He became a bit tense during some of the handling, and became stiff and uncomfortable during the paw handling item. Petey was easily pushed of the food bowl during the food item, and was easy to handle when engaged with the toys and rawhides. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while pulling back paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog licks, then turns away. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Petey is nervous but tolerant when greeted, although his body is stiff. He does not engage with other dogs.
