11/27/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Pepper Jack doesn’t just belong in sandwiches — it might belong on your couch! This guy has the sweetest hazel eyes and a white blaze on his head like a horse. He’s very handsome, but also a bit skinny, so it’s no surprise that he loves treats. He’s more than happy to earn them and responds to “paw” and “down.” Being so food motivated comes in handy if he gets a little jumpy in excitement — he’s very easily focused into a “sit.” He pulls on the leash initially, but once he’s relieved himself (he seems housebroken) walks much nicer. He seems very interested, in a friendly way, towards the other dogs we’ve seen — following them along the fence as they walk by, and wagging his tail. When I try to initiate a game of fetch it seems his favorite part is the retrieving, not so much the dropping! He carries the ball with him as he sniffs the yard, then hops up on the bench with it and lies down next to me to chew on it. The dairy aisle version might be a little spicy, but our Pepper Jack is very sweet! He has shown me a very soft personality — softly wagging his tail at the sound of my voice, quicker with each word, and leaning in when I pet him. He seems very eager to please and so happy to get attention. Please come meet him at Brooklyn ACC – you’ll make his day!
11/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pepper Jack came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Pepper Jack was nervous, but allowed all handling. During SAFER Pepper Jack came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and hyper, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Pepper Jack was easily aroused, mouths the leash with his body tense and slowly de-escalates during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Pepper Jack was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Pepper Jack appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. Pepper Jack can become mouthy with the leash and tense body language and slowly de-escalates once tag item ends, so the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter with no young children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog gets easily aroused, mouths the leash with tense body language and slowly de-escalates. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Pepper Jack greets briefly and is sexually motivated but takes correction well.
11/17/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Pepper Jack greets well and may engage in play briefly with some dogs. He can be sexually motivated. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Pepper Jack can go to a home with a female dog and may be placed with a male dog but we recommend that a pre-adoption interaction be required. He seems to do well with both playful and non-playful dogs so any playstyle can be considered. When off leash with other dogs, Pepper Jack greets briefly and is sexually motivated but takes correction well. 11/22 update: Pepper Jack is sexually motivated but will respond to play solicitation by another dog and engage in brief bouts of bouncy play. 11/24 update: Pepper Jack greets politely and is a bit bouncy but does not engage in play. He is sexually motivated but is not pushy. 11/27 update: Pepper Jack greets politely and engages in brief bouts of gentle play. He is a bit sexually motivated but takes correction well. 11/30 update: Pepper Jack is very tolerant of an overly aroused, obnoxious female dog. Allows female to mount him with little reaction.
