A volunteer writes:
Little Pepper came to us as her owner became to ill to provide for a pet.She wanted a good family  to take care  of this precious  girl whose health seemed to have gone adrift too. Indeed, Pepper is skin and bones, super tiny at 20lbs and her belly is bloated. She is as hungry as a bear at a point that she can not make the difference between my fingers and the roastbeef. It was a wise decision for Pepper’s family to bring her to the care center. Despite her condition, Pepper is very cute. She owns a lovely marbled latte coat  and is so small  she can fit in my two hands. She is very mobile, energetic, a bit unfocused like so often skinny dogs are, seeking attention and food. She does not mind a leash but prefers the arms and the lap. Pepper is not scared when a dog comes to say hello. She is not mouthy and has no handling issues that I could notice. In her kennel, as she is resting, she  comes right away to her door  in the hope to be in company. Lovely Pepper is as cute as a spring flower bud…, the promise of a beautiful and charming adult, providing the right care and of course love…Pepper is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming of a better future…with you.

Dobby walks calmly on leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Dobby had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. She did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Pepper took the rawhide away but had soft body language.
Dobby did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, low and a bit fearful.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Food 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek.
Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.
Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. she does not place her body between you and the rawhide.
When off leash with other dogs Dobby may be submissive and uncomfortable with pushy dogs. However, when interacting with calmer dogs she will interact briefly and spend most of her time exploring her surroundings.
