04/03/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Tennis ball, meet Pepper. Pepper, tennis ball. And so a passionate love affair begins…While it’s true that many dogs like playing with balls, few are as singular in their appreciation as Pepper and though he’s happy to greet other pups, chow down on treats or enjoy an all-over body massage, nothing lights up that sunny face like the sight of his beloved. Their relationship usually ends in tears (quite literally – no one ‘skins’ a ball like Pepper!) but it’s a beautiful thing while it lasts and watching him dashing after a throw then hunkering down to delicately peel first one color, then the other from his red and blue ball (pretty impressive for a guy who’s color-blind!) is enough to make you laugh out loud. Pepper knows how to sit on command and wait (for the ball of course) and he’s a decent walker once in harness, using the facilities promptly and meeting other dogs with cheerful tail wags and a soft body. He never guards his things and I can pet him all over, even when he’s deep in the midst of a ball chewing session. Pepper’s already neutered and ready to go and his wish list is very simple: A loving family, lots of good food and as many ball toys as possible – preferably ones a bit stronger than your average tennis ball! It’s easy to add a little spice and a whole lot of handsome to your life, just visit our Manhattan Care Center and ask for some Pepper!
04/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pepper came to us when a member of the public found him running freely in her building. He was friendly and allowed handling during intake and tried to socially approach every dog and person he saw. He pulled during his relief walk and was interested in other dogs in the yard. Pepper did not settle for the Look item on the SAFER assessment, pulling his head away but did not show any aggressive behaviors. He allowed all tactile handling and maintained a soft loose body. Pepper joined in the game of Tag and settled at the end right away, barking at the assessor playfully when the game ended. He calmly allowed the food dish to move away from him while eating, and accepted the assess-a-hand removing his face from the food bowl as well. He relinquished the toy easily and kept a firm grip on the rawhide while his body remained loose and playful. The Behavior Team feels Pepper would do well in an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide.
