A staff member writes: Penny is a tan female hound who was brought into ACC today as a stray. Penny was emaciated and also had an open wound on her tail and she will be given a full physical exam. Penny was slow and lethargic do to her health issues but she did show signs of energy when she was given food and water. During the Intake process she was calm and well behaved and had limited interaction with people. She did allow people to pet her but she was slow to walk with a stranger. She did allow herself to be collared and photographed with no issues.
SAFER: AVERAGE HOME
Penny came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in home are unknown. At intake Penny was calm and well behaved, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Penny came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, she was friendly and attention seeking towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Penny follows the handler with her body low and fearful during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Penny was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Penny appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels she can be suitable for a “Average” adopter.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed.
Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against his cheek.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog licks, then turns away.
