04/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pecan came in as a stray surrender, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake Pecan was reported to be energetic and loose, she was receptive to introduction and allowed all handling by an Admissions counselor. During SAFER Pecan was not very attention seeking, and appeared to be more interested in her surroundings. She had a loose body posture for some of the handling, but was in constant movement, and became a bit tense during the paw handling. Pecan became stiff when playing tag with the assessor, and jumped up mouthing the leash, but she was easy to calm down. During the resources portion of the assessment, Pecan became stiff and growled when being pushed out of the food bowl, and when the assessor attempted to remove the rawhide item. When engaged with the toys, Pecan held a firm grip and too the toy away with stiff body language. Due to the potential guarding behaviors seen at the time of the assessment, the department feels Pecan would be best suited for a home without children, as well as an experienced adopter who is able to manage and provide behavior modification work for the behaviors seen during SAFER if they occur in a home setting. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog responds with her tail high, ears forward, mouth closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and mouths the leash. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Body a bit tense Food: 4. Dog growls. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is stiff. Rawhide: 4. Dog growls. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Pecan does well in the yard with a female dog but appears anxious as she wanders the yard.
