04/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Pear came to us with Pepper, brought by a good samaritan who found both dogs roaming loose in her building. Pear is a real gem, a black pearl, dressed in a shiny and well groomed ebony coat. Her sparkling brown eyes, all on me, give her the most tender look and send the message…I am all yours…. She has been very well cared for and seems very much like a good family dog who got out of luck. She walks beautifully on the leash, her kennel is spotless and she eliminates as soon as we leave the building. Pear comes right away when called (even though it is not her real name), sits on command or on her very own, when she sees me with a treat. She is a wonderful lap dog, spreading lavishly over my thighs, her head against my chest, like I have been her mama for all those years. Pear is a very sweet dog. It does not come as a surprise that she aced her behavioral evaluation at the care center, getting the highest possible score… Now, Pear who is at the Manhattan Care Center, needs a home, sweet home and a family or master to love and be cherished by. Do not deprive yourself any longer from a wonderful friend..Come and get her soon, make her yours, take her home.
04/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – BEGINNER
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pear came to us after someone found her wandering around loose inside their building. She was friendly and social upon intake, and tried to approach every dog and person she came in contact with. She was very calm when walking for her relief walk. She allowed all items of the SAFER assessment with no agressive behavior at all. She held gave for three full seconds during the Look item. She joined the game during Tag. Pear ceased eating and lifted her head when the Assess-a-hand approached the food dish. She relinquished toy and rawhide easily. Pear is social, friendly, calm, and the Behavior Team feels she would do well in a Beginner home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push her out. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide 1. Minimal interest.
