WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Patchen is so named after one of streets at the intersection where he and his housemate, Green, lived before their owner was evicted. His spotted white mask and gentle eyes make his face hard not to fall for. Though he approached the front of his cage when I first met him, that face wore an unmistakable expression of being very scared. He came out easily and kept his tail tucked as he explored the yard. He gobbled up the treats I threw in his direction and soon he was approaching me and quickly wagging his barely untucked tail. Patchen still seemed scared of his surroundings – he barked at strangers that approached and cowered when there was a loud noise, but no longer scared of me! He gently placed his paws on my lap and made soft eye contact as I pet him. He has warmed up more and more each time I take him out, but this remains his signature move. When I stop petting him he’ll sometimes place one paw on my arm or inch a little closer. He still barks at strangers sometimes, but passing a familiar staff member in the hallway he props his paws on her, too. He hasn’t shown me his playful side yet (when I throw a tennis ball he just sort of watches me), but is very waggy and at ease outside. He walks nicely on leash and seems to hold it forever in his cage, so likely has housetraining. He knows “sit” and is very food motivated, but takes treats nicely. He may need a little time to warm up, but Patchen is incredibly sweet, well mannered, and quietly affectionate. He is looking for an experienced person to help better socialize him…. and give him a new street to call home! He is more than worth it, please come meet him at Brooklyn ACC!
07/09/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Patchen came into the care center with no information on his past behaviors in a home and upon arrival to the care center Patchen was reported to be nervous. During SAFER Patchen was a bit shy, but remained close to the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue, but became a bit fearful during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Patchen was stiff and could not be pushed out of the food bowl, but he did not escalate to a growl or bite, and he was not interested in the toys or rawhide items. Patchen can be shy for introductions, but when given the opportunity to interact at his own pace he becomes sociable. The department feels Patchen would be best suited for an experienced adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Patchen is becoming more social, he greets other dogs appropriately and is tolerant of interaction.
07/03/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Patchen is nervous and allows greeting but remains hunched over with his tail tucked. 7/7 Update: Patchen remains nervous and stiff, selective.
