09/26/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes (as told by Parker): Hiiiiiiiiiiii! I’m Parker and I’m adorable! Because I’m so cute I think I can get away with biting on the leash and being a bit rough, but the people here are smarter than me and they’ve figured me out. I love treats, so when I’m walking with a person and I start biting on the leash they just stop walking, so I stop and sit, and then I get a treat for being a good boy and that makes me happy. I know that if we do that enough I’ll just behave. I was found tied to a pole and then came here. I get to play with other dogs and they call me “social, playful, bouncy and vocal”. Hey, I’m a puppy so that’s what we do! I’m very handsome and very smart, even if I do say so myself; I can sit when you ask me to, and like I said, I love treats! I really like being with people and smothering them with kisses, and I try to not be too rough, but it’s hard sometimes because I’m a pretty enthusiastic boy. I’m looking for an active family, and another dog sibling would be nice so that I can have someone to play with. I need someone to make the commitment to train me not to be mouthy and jump on the leash, but I promise I’ll learn quickly with proper positive training. Don’t forget, I’ll do anything for a treat!! Oh, and I love belly rubs too! So, come meet me, and let’s promise each other a lifetime of love.
10/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Behavior Update: Since Parker’s last SAFER he has since been adopted and returned due to behavior issues. The recent adopter stated that Parker is very high energy and growls when someone tries to take a toy or treat away from him. It was also reported that Parker is quick to use his mouth in play and has poor body awareness, resulting in him mouthing handlers with moderate pressure. Parker was also reported to destroy household items when left home alone. We advise future adopters to make sure to provide mentally and physically stimulating toys to keep Parker occupied when left alone. The behavior department believes that Parker will do best in an experienced home with no children. SAFER: 9/26 Parker pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Parker was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He mouthed without applying pressure during the Squeeze test. Parker was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. He was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language. Parker did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Experienced home with no children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. When off leash with other dogs Parker is playful and social, engaging in vocal running play with both males and females. 9/25 update: Parker continues to engage in rough play with males and females.
