05/30/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I missed my opportunities to get a great picture of Mr. Parker, as he’s so playful and fun, and such a great hugger I never quite ‘captured’ him with my camera. He’s always smiling, ready to play, excited to greet other dogs that come by our pen, and those we pass in the street. Likely housetrained, he ‘goes’ as soon as we’re out the door, and has zig zaggy energy on leash. His tail wags happily at both people and other animals we pass, and Mr. Parker could easily be renamed Mr. Personality as he’s all that. We stopped to talk to a staff member, and while Parker sat quietly by my side, after a while he thought it best that we spend our time hugging and wrapped his paws around my waist and stood there hugging me. Can I get an ‘awwwwww……..’. Even his intake notes from staff say he’s “playful and social during the exam”. That’s pretty impressive! His coat is lush, soft and gorgeous, his weight perfect for his size and he simply loves everyone. In additional to stand up hugs, he loved laying his head in my lap for some serious head petting, just standing there absorbing the love. With other dogs in group he’s playful and exuberant. Mr. Personality, I mean Parker, is looking for an active home in which exercise and hugs happen daily and often. He’s a fabulous dog looking for a fabulous home!
Another volunteer writes: “Parker’s very good–he just wants to give hugs,” said a kennel worker before proudly displaying a picture of the two of them in an embrace. Not to hurt his feelings, but it’s nothing personal: Parker loves everyone, and might very well hug a tree if it held its branches out just so. What a most excellent boy! I’m a little biased since as I took notes about him he was sitting on a bench gently licking my arm before settling his head into my lap, but I remind myself again, it’s nothing personal. Parker’s just practicing for his forever family, and boy, does he have the love routine down pat. A do-not-miss-dog! Parker is a big mushy sweetheart. He’s a cutie with one ear up and the other down. He had enthusiastically rolled over for belly rubs when I was returning him. Parker is all about the hugs, kisses and snuggles!
04/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Parker pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Parker did a lot of jumping up, body checking and played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction. He showed some concerning behavior during the food bowl, test – stiffening and growling, but did not snap at or bite the assess-a-hand. Parker was not interested in toys or rawhide. Parker is a very active and jumpy dog. He shows some guarding issues during the food bowl test. He needs a significant amount of exercise, mental stimulation and training. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experience no child home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog – dog: 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper:A1032150 5/26 update: guarding behavior over food has also been seen in his kennel. When fed in the kennel Parker becomes tense and gulps his food. He growls when approached while eating or if the caretaker moves to remove the bowl before he is finished. Potential adopters need to be aware of this in-kennel behavior and the SAFER behavior, familiar with food guarding/possession behavior, and prepared to safely manage it should it appear in a home environment. Items should never be taken away from Parker without trading up or rewarding him for relinquishing. Parker should be left alone while eating so he does not have an opportunity to rehearse this guarding behavior, and so he feels comfortable while eating.
