04/25/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: There is something about the small little blockhead dogs that get me every time. And when the behavior tells me that a dog is “really nice” I know I’ll be falling head over heels in love. And so I did with little miniature Parker! Adorably small, a little muscle man who looks like a big dog who shrunk in the wash, Parker has a mushy soft face, quiet eyes and a gently wagging tail. His leash manners are good, he peed forever as soon as we were outside, he’s well groomed and a good weight for his size. Gentle and low key he hops up on the bench to sit beside me, accepting my petting but declining my treats. I guess he’s used to better :). A staff person joined us in the pen and Parker made a new friend easily, wagging his tail and then sad when she left. It’s no surprise that he rocked his behavior assessment indicating he’ll be a good fit in just about any home and if you’re first in line to meet him it could be yours. Small enough to fit into any living situation, and gentle enough for any family, he hopped right back into his kennel when our time together was over. He’s an awesome dog, miniature in size, big in heart. Ask to meet him today!
05/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Parker was difficult to remove from his kennel exhibiting some concern when we try to get them out (barking or charging at the gate). Once he was out he walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Parker was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Parker was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language. He approaches the helper dog with his tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long. Parker did not show any concern during the behavior assessment but he needs an experience adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. He may require positive reinforcement training techniques to address Parker barrier aggression. We also recommend a home without children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral. Helper:A1033946
