07/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Beautiful, quiet Pablo is barely out of puppyhood but his bright eyes are already tinged with sadness and his pleading face and worried brow speak volumes; in his world, life is not kind and people cannot be trusted. He’s easy to leash and eager to leave his den but painfully hand-shy at times and any sudden movement or the unexpected appearance of a stranger prompts him to freeze and cower in place. When I offer a treat he declines to eat until it’s placed on the floor and though I can softly pet and fuss over him, even clean his eyes without complaint, cuddling is a foreign concept and I wonder if he’s ever known a kind touch from a human hand. There is one thing in life that Pablo does know, trust and love with all his heart — the friendship of other dogs. On leash he’s a good walker but pulls enthusiastically whenever a four-legged pal comes near and in playgroup he gets right into the thick of things, meeting and greeting his fellow pups with a happy wagging tail. Pablo is a work of art as priceless and beautiful as any piece created by his famous namesake but he’s still in need of some restoration to help him shine his brightest. With time, TLC and plenty of doggie play dates, I have no doubt that this fine young boy will soon learn that life (and people) can be wonderful. Pablo is waiting for a patient teacher to heal his broken heart…could it be you?
07/18/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pablo came to us a stray on 7/15/15. Pablo was very nervous and fearful when entering the behavior room and it took a good amount of time to relax in order to run the SAFER. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items, but maintained very tense and fearful body language throughout the assessment. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Pablo showed no interest in either the toy or rawhide items on this portion of the assessment. Due to the behavior demonstrated here in the shelter the behavior department believes that Pablo should go to an experienced home with no children. All interactions should be done very slowly in a quiet environment. Potential adopters should be able to supply positive behavior modification, and positive experiences for Pablo. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Pablo is nervous at first but greets the other dog politely and eventually solicits play.
