05/06/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: This handsome little guy watched me take out other dogs, and when I approached his kennel his tail began to wag in welcome. Yay, it’s finally my turn that tail was saying. Easily leashed he hopped clumsily out of his arrival kennel and out the door we go. Small and compact in a gleaming black coat, Oryan pooped 4 X ( I know this falls under ‘too much information’, but he’s clearly housetrained and holding it all for a long time.) As we walk it becomes clear that Oryan has an issue with his back legs; they wobble from time to time, and he’ll lose his balance for an instant but rights himself quickly. I shorten our walk and go into a backyard pen so Oryan can be off leash and I can observe more closely. He may also have either a slight vision issue, or whatever is going on with him effects his senses. He smells a treat though, and takes it gently. Wagging his tail, happy being pet when he’s comfortable, he wanders around the pen exploring his new environment. Oryan needs a slow approach and not to feel overwhelmed but is a friendly pup and already a staff favorite. Trying to make the best out of his physical issue, Oryan needs a friend. How big is your heart?
05/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Oryan walks calmly on leash. According to the medical department Oryan have Ataxia that is a coordination of muscle movements”. During the assessment Oryan repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment. He was uncomfortable with handling, turning quickly toward the hand trying to bite the assessor during the look. Oryan did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. He does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior and medical condition in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. Dog freezes and growls. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. Helper: A1026191
