09/26/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Desperate to get my attention, I finally get my chance to leash Oozzie and out we go. Peeing a river as soon as we are out the door, tells me why he worked so hard and then I felt guilty, of course, that I made him wait so long. He’s a compact, sleek and elegant looking boy in a gleaming black coat who thinks he’s a lap dog. He tried his best to fit all of him in my lap, leaving me in fits of laughter at his efforts. He’s a riot! Oozzie showed off his sit for a treat which he takes gently, comes when called, and wags his tail at everyone as we head to the park. He pulls hard on the leash so will benefit from a harness and/or some leash training. Off leash in the backyard, he enthusiastically jumps up beside me again, gives me kisses, and again tries to fit himself in my lap. In group play he’s social with both males and females, tolerant, a “gentle and dainty” player who plays when solicited. Friendly, enthusiastic and active, Oozzie is looking for his forever lap. Come try yours on for size, I bet he’ll make it work!
09/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ozzie pulls on leash; when entering the assessment, he was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up to solicit attention with a very loose, wiggly body. He remained loose and wiggly throughout handling. He remained relaxed when playing tag with the assessor and approached the assessor in a friendly manner once the game ceased and jumped up. Ozzie did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He kept a firm grip on the toy and stiffened during the toy test and took the rawhide away with his body a bit stiff. Ozzie was surrendered to the care center; upon intake, he had a wiggly body and wagging tail, he sat on command and allowed all handling to be completed without aggression. Ozzie remained loose and wiggly throughout the handling portion of the assessment but showed some mildly possessive behaviors during the toy and rawhide tests. The Behavior Department recommends Ozzie go to an experienced home with no young children, that is comfortable monitoring and positively modifying any possessive behaviors if they manifest in a home environment. Oozzie also appears to have a high level of energy and adopters should be prepared to provide him with adequate mental and physical stimulation. Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, mouth closed, tail wagging. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, and comes toward the Assessor in a friendly manner when the Assessor ceases moving and jumps up. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 3. Dog keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is a bit stiff. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Ozzie greets politely and seems interested but does not engage in play.
