04/14/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/14/15 09:34 Basic Info: Ocho is a 1 year 9 month old Neutered dog who has no prior injuries or medical issues. He was living with just one owner and was surrendered to the shelter due to owner medical problems. Social Life and Personality: According to the owner he has been around children ages 1, 9, and 11. He is relaxed and playful with them and is very tolerant of children who sit on him, pull his tail and ears by just sitting down. When he plays with them he will play exuberant but at times he is a little rough because he will jump up and knock over the children. He is fearful of other dogs and will approach with stiff body and his body turned away but if the other dog is calm he will approach and sniff them. When he does play with them he is exuberant. He is house trained but would have accidents inside when owner was unable to walk him due to her medical issues. He was kept mostly indoors and has a high level of energy. He was described as playful, confident, excitable (particularly when he sees people or children), affectionate, and friendly. Behavior: He has not bitten anyone or any animal before but he does play bite but not hard enough to bruise or draw blood. When owner took food, bones, rawhides, or treats away he would sit down and wait and when toys were taken away he would be friendly and try to play by play bowing and tugging on the toy with soft body. He is not bothered when given a bath and brushed. He is friendly when unfamiliar people approach the house or family member. New Family Info: He knows the commands sit and come. He is used to slow walks on leash and will play with all toys but destroys soft toys easily. He also chews and eats socks if they are left out. He plays tug and chase and has been crate trained but does not do well, eating the cage and trying to escape. He is used to a wire crate with plastic bottom. At home he followed owner around and when left home alone is well behaved but if food is left out he will eat it. He is not bothered by loud noises such as fireworks or thunder. Intake Behavior: During intake would approach extended hand and sniff/lick it. When touched had soft, wiggly body and would jump onto admission counselor. Allowed to be scanned (negative), collared, pictured, and leashed without aggression. When given treats would take gently from hand or catch in air. Would listen to sit command when given and would pull on leash to explore the office when not being paid attention to.
04/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I love chunky dogs. I know it’s not good for them and Ocho should lose a few pounds to maintain his good health but his girth makes him utterly adorable and cuddly. Our walk to the park is pure joy and I could not believe such a big boy was keeping step with me while maintaining a loose leash! He notices squirrels and birds but meanders past without a reaction. Free in a pen Ocho dances and bows to the neighboring male dog next to us. He half heartedly chases a ball before coming back to me for caresses. At first nervous with another volunteer coming into our pen for a photoshoot, Ocho is very quickly won over with a treat and allows a kerchief to be placed around his neck. Ocho comes with amazing owner surrender notes- neutered, lived with children from ages 1 to 11 and was very tolerant of them pulling his tail and ears and sitting on him. In fact he would react by sitting down. He is such a good boy that when his food, bones etc. were taken away he would just sit and wait and when toys were taken away he would play bow. I was so impressed with this family dog who is handling his abandonment with such courage and dignity and I know that you will be too. Ocho is looking for a new family who will love and adore him and he will give all that back in return.
Another volunteer writes: The line forms to the left to spend time with this terrific dog, and volunteers “in the know” can’t wait to take him for a walk. Handsome, a bit chunky (more to love), he’s great on the leash walking spryly alongside his person and never pulling. His face sparkles, his tail wags and he gives a big boy hug like no other – once you’ve been hugged by Ocho all other hugs pale in comparison! Fine with other dogs, he’s happy to be in group but keeps to himself not interacting much but enjoying the time. Ocho can get a bit excited and mouthy while playing with his person but a firm no handles it with ease. Ocho needs an active home in which there’s plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. He’s an awesome dog looking for an equally awesome owner. Is that you?
