A volunteer writes: When his family lost their home, quiet, gentle Nuka lost his whole world. His Dad, the kids, a kitty sibling… everyone that Nuka loved and held dear was suddenly gone. Now it’s two days later and my task is to help this handsome hunk forget his troubles for a while and see if we can bring a beautiful smile (it’s there in his intake pic, I swear!) back to that adorably serious face. Walking calmly out to the yard Nuka takes care of his business then immediately launches a thorough investigation of our pen, sniffing and exploring from top to tail… perhaps his people could still be nearby? He waits and watches at the fence, climbing onto his hinds and perking his big ears at the sound of laughing children in the street but alas, it’s not them. When I call him back to me he hesitates at first, unwilling to leave his vigil at the gate, but some tasty treats are enough to lure him away and he sits very politely before softly nibbling them from my hand. Nuka knows commands for ‘stay’, ‘down’ and ‘no’, is trained not to get on the furniture (though he’s happy to climb up for hugs and kisses with humans!) and has lived in peaceful harmony with 4 young human siblings (aged 2, 4, 7 and 16) and a not-so-loving cat friend too. We’re told he was nothing but gentle, affectionate and playful with them all and though he can be tense around other dogs, Nuka has no problem strolling through the noisy kennel area or passing them in the street and his leash manners are truly impeccable. He likes to chase but not retrieve a ball and as per his former owner he has no issues sharing his toys or food either, letting me snatch the tennis ball up from right under his nose without complaint. If you’ve been searching for a tried-and-tested family dog then Nuka is your guy, he’s a true gentleman who’d make a most affectionate, well-behaved pet and as an added bonus he’s already neutered and ready to leave immediately! While I never did manage to capture his elusive smile I’ve no doubt it’s still under there, just waiting to shine on the lucky forever family who welcomes him home…
08/20/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nuka pulls hard on the leash. He was not very sociable he was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. Nuka became a bit uncomfortable during the handling and he was hard to position. He was uncomfortable during the paw squeeze instead we used the flank squeeze he moved his body away and flips his head toward the assessors hand. Nuka was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. Nuka was surrender to us. According to his previous owner Nuka is described as playful, confident, and affectionate with a high-activity level. Owner says he lived with children ages 2, 4, 7, and 16. Nuka is described as being gentle and very affectionate with them. Owner describes Nuka as being very alert and tense around other dogs. Nuka had a past incident last year, where he got out of his home and got physical with another dog while it was being walked”. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. He needs and adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. Nuka will do better in a home where he is the only dog. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 3. Dog is not fearful and is struggling to get away. The dog is not focused and is in constant movement, unconnected to the Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while pulling back paw. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while moving hip away. Food: No interest. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Due to his history Nuka is muzzled for his interaction. He greets at the gate with a loose body but is forward upon entry, attempting to mount but he responds well to correction. He will then engage in brief bouts of play so the muzzle is removed and he continues to be social and playful.
