07/09/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/09/15 16:08 Victor, Hayes, and Nina were brought to BxAC by the super of a building after their owner moved out and left them behind 1 week ago. The super reports that the dogs are all friendly. Victor appears thin with all of his ribs protruding. He ate food quickly upon arrival. Hayes had a lot of masses all over his body. Nina has a lot of patches of hairloss and red skin. She ate food quickly upon arrival. All three of the dogs had soft bodies, and wagging tails during handling (scan (-), collar, switching leashes, positioning for pictures) and their mouths were usually open. They approached and leaned into us while we pet them. They took treats gently. They allowed us to pick them up and put them in their kennels and didn’t resist.
07/10/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Nina, the lady of the family with whom she was found abandoned. A pretty little girl in a black and white coat, patchy in spots perhaps due to nutrients going to a couple of litters she likely had. She’s beautiful regardless, and it’s all an easy fix with good nutritious food. She’s great on the leash ( she pulls slightly from time to time), likely housetrained, and all about kisses and hugs when we stop to take some pictures. Not minding being tethered, she makes soft eye contact as she poses, only turning her attention away to watch other dogs approach. . She seems to love other dogs, her tail wagging happily at those we pass in the park. Making friends with a man in the park who wanted to meet her, Nina is gentle in her greeting. Sweet, calm, low key and affectionate, she’s ready to begin her new life today…..will it be with you?
07/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nina was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. She was calm and allowed for all handling to be completed with a soft body but was easily distracted between items. She was calm and relaxed when playing tag with the assessor; she did become a bit distracted but was easily refocused on the game and approached the assessor in a friendly manner once the game ceased. Nina did not growl but became stiff and snapped at the assess-a-hand when she was pushed out of the food bowl. She froze when the assessor reached for the toy and again, did not growl but tried to bite the assess-a-hand when the assessor reached for the rawhide. Nina came to our center with two other dogs after being abandoned in an apartment when their owner moved out. Upon intake, Nina had a soft body and wagging tail. During the handling portion of the assessment, Nina had a soft body and remained friendly toward the assessor. However, Nina showed concerning behavior during each of the resources, freezing and attempting to bite the assess-a-hand; for this reason the Behavior Department recommends placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, a bit distracted by other stimuli in the room but comes toward the Assessor in a friendly manner when the Assessor ceases moving. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy 4. Dog freezes. Rawhide 5. Dog attempts to bite Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail at spine level, ears forward.
07/14/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off-leash with other dogs, Nina remains interested in interacting with other dogs, offers a few play bows, but does not fully engage in play. 7/15 update: Nina is social, respectful toward nervous dogs and will engage in gentle play with other playful dogs. 7/18 update: Nina engages in brief bouts of play and will mount a playful male. When interacting with a nervous male she becomes stiff and will assert herself over him when he offers correction.
