07/31/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Who’s up for some playful puppy fun?!! Nika’s pretty name means both ‘good’ and ‘victory’ and with her charming smile and comical personality she certainly scored a direct hit on my heart the day we met, winning over any reservations I had about taking out such a big, bouncy babe by being nothing but friendly throughout our date. Surrendered by her former owner for being ‘too strong’, Nika is feeling quite stressed out over this sudden reversal of fortune but she’s still eager to meet new friends of both the two- and four-legged variety and very happy to be taking a stroll (ok, jog might be more accurate!) to the park. Nika is a handful in the best possible way, jumping up for hugs and enjoying all the love and sweet talk I care to offer and while she does sometimes playfully mouth the leash, a light ‘no’ and it’s quickly dropped in favor of more praise and petting. She seems to be quite house trained and sits politely on command, sniffing and rejecting my inferior treats with a smile before hopping back up to explore some more and other dogs of all shapes and sizes are met with happy enthusiasm. Puppies need lots of love but guidance is important too, and while Nika already has the basics very much down, a refresher course in leash manners and meet’n’greet etiquette would help polish her charms to a perfect shine. Nika did quite well on her behavior evaluation and in an experienced home where she’ll be given plenty of socialization and all the playtime she wants, this promising young starlet is destined for greatness!
07/31/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nika pulls a bit on leash. She was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. She was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Nika was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She was not interested in food but took the toy and rawhide with a soft body language. Nika is an active dog she need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 1. No interest. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place his body between you and the rawhide. When off-leash with other dogs, Nika greets politely, and then seeks out human interaction, jumping up on the handler. She does not engage in play. Additional notes: While social and appropriate outside the kennel, Nika does show some possible barrier reactivity inside. When approached, she often is initially soft in body with a gently wagging tail, but quickly stiffens and may growl. She may snap at hands presented to the kennel. We recommend that potential adopters be aware of this behavior, familiar with barrier reactivity, and comfortable managing any similar behavior that may appear in a home environment.
