12/01/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/01/15 14:22 Basic Information: Niagara is a beautiful black pit bull with white markings on her chest and paws. She is around 1 year old. She has had skin issues in the past but they are treatable. She was last seen by a vet at the Humane Society about 2 months ago. Niagara is described as loving and playful by her former owners. She really loved the cat in her last home. Social Life and Personality: Niagara loves people. She loves kids. She loves teens. She loves adults. Niagara has trouble containing her love sometimes. She plays with small children the same way she plays with adults. She needs some training but she is a very loving and smart girl. Niagara really loves cats. She likes to play with them. This dog is house trained and will let you know when it’s time to go outside. Her activity level is pretty high so it would be best if she could go to an active home. Niagara is playful, excitable, affectionate and friendly. Behavior History: This girl is a lover. She loves the water so bath time is a good time. She might bark when someone knocks at the door but that’s not a bad thing. She just wants to be friends! For a New Family to Know: Niagara already knows how to sit on command and she is very smart so she is eager to learn more. She loves to play fetch and tug. She loves all kinds of toys but really loves ball toys. She is used to dry food and sleeping in her owner’s bed.
12/04/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer Writes: Cats, cats, cats… where have all the cats gone? Niagara, a one year old little girl, barely out of puppyhood… loves cats, but reading what her former owner has to say about her, it seems that Niagara is fond of everybody around. She welcomes me warmly in her kennel and bounces out of her den. Let’s go play. Let’s have fun. She pulls a little in the street, runs excitedly toward people and other dogs. Kids coming out of a school catch particularly her attention. Her eyes are bright and her face carries a large smile. Oh, yes, we were told that Niagara loves children of all ages. Free in a pen, Niagara flies after a tennis ball and brings it back toward me. No problem to get it out of her mouth. She sits on command and for treats, comes right away when I call her and hops on the bench, on demand. She is quite a good listener. She is hard to photograph as she is a moving target with a wiggly body and constantly wagging tail. As we play tag, she mouths a little and tries to take the leash. A firm NO takes care of the issue. Indeed, Niagara is still a very young gal and although she is a good girl and knows a number of commands, she still needs some training to perfect what has already be taught to her and curb a little, just a little, her enthusiasm. Niagara is a very lovable puppy who has been so well cared for, treated as a pet, loved and respected by her former family and so ready to jump into your arms and embellish your life with her presence. Niagara is at the Manhattan Care Center, already spayed and ready to be yours.
12/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Niagara pulls a bit on the leash. She was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. Niagara was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Niagara was not interested in toys. Niagara was surrender to us. According to her previous owner Niagara is playful, excitable, affectionate and friendly. She is friendly around strangers, children and cats”. Niagara appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for her energy. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. No interest.
12/02/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Niagara greets other well and may engage in brief bouts of play. She is tolerant of puppy play as well as males that attempt to mount her. She socializes in large groups of dogs but does not engage in rough or running play when solicited. The behavior department feels that Niagara could go to a home with other gently playful dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Niagara greets and shows brief inerest, then explores her surroundings. 12/3 update: Niagara greets well and is tolerant of an assertive female. She will let the female mount her then will approach her to lick her lips after the other female has walked away. 12/4 update: Niagara exhibits submissive posturing when with a more assertive female but is more confident today. She will solicit play and continue to engage when it is reciprocated. 12/5 update: Niagara engages in running play with males and females. 12/6: Niagara attempts to solicit play with males and females. 12/7: Niagara engages in running play with males and females. 12/8, 12/9 update: Niagara is social and playful. She will engage in running play with males and females and is respectful of dogs who are fearful or uncomfortable. Niagara is uncomfortable when mounted but will not offer correction.
