09/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Neko previously lived with 1 adult. The owner stated when he is around children and other dogs he is reactive and will interact with children and dogs in a rough manner or he will not play with them or engage with them at all. The owner mentioned Neko is house trained, well behaved when home alone and has a medium activity level. The owner describes Neko as being playful, pushy, confident, excitable, affectionate, anxious, mellow, independent and friendly. It was reported by the owner Neko will bark and growl if anyone tries to take his food, toys and treats. At intake Neko was calm and aloof, he was not interested with the counselor, he allowed to be collared by his owner, he allowed some handling. During SAFER Neko came into the assessment room nervous and alert, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Neko freezes and growls at the assessor when attempting to put the leash on him. During the resource portion of the assessment Neko was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Due to major behavioral concerns and resource guarding stated from the previous owner, the behavior department feels placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-to-dog: Due to Neko’s history of biting without provocation he is muzzled for handler safety. He greets the helper dog with a low wagging tail but will then pace the yard panting and attempting to exit.
