04/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Nala is so beautiful in an unconventional way. When I first met her a few months ago, she weighed in at nearly 90 pounds. She is curvy and voluptuous and when you walk her through the halls of the care center, you really feel how big she is, as she pulls on the leash pretty hard. She has an adorable grey patch over her left eye, giving her a look of mystery. But there’s no mystery regarding this gal. Over the last few months she has become a volunteer favorite. To meet Nala is to love her! She is so sweet and attentive, silly when she plays with toys, and just a pleasure to be around. Her previous owner indicated that she is not friendly towards other dogs. Each time she meets a dog through the yard fence, (she’s met bigger dogs, smaller dogs, old dogs and puppies) she is always the first to do a play bow. She never shows any sort of aggression and though sometimes she does get quite fixated on the other dog it does seem to be in an inquisitive way. Having said that, a home without other dogs would be ideal for our lady. Nala’s previous owner also reports that she is housetrained, fine when left home alone, and enjoys the company of everyone, including children! Nala has been in our care since early February. She has seen Valentine’s Day and Easter come and go, and has lost quite a bit of the weight that made her so beautiful. At times she even seems depressed. Because even though we try to make Nala feel at home, the care center is not a substitute for the real thing. Come meet Nala and see if you can’t make your home hers!
04/11/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nala was reported to be well-behaved around children and strangers, but does not get along with other dogs or animals. She was said to have a medium activity level, and was described as playful, affectionate, confident, and was reported to be housebroken. During re-SAFER Nala continues to pull strongly on the leash. She is sociable when interacting with the assessor, but is easily distracted by her surroundings. She allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue, and was not interested in the food item. She was easy to handle when engaged with the toys, and only showed minimal interest in the rawhides. When Nala isn’t distracted with her surrounding she interacts interacts very well and maintains a loose body posture, but she has shown some concerns when around other dogs and can be difficult to manage at times, so the Behavior Department feels Nala is suitable for an experienced adopter. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog smells, then turns away. Dog-dog: When approaching a pen with off leash dogs, Nala has a tense body at the front of the cage and tail up to spine. She begins to rush and loud bark at the front of the pen.
