A volunteer writes: “She looks like she’s been through a lot” is what someone passing by says as he looks at Mushu. And she does – she has a few scars on her face and is clearly a recent (and probably repeat) mother, without her puppies. But whatever she’s been through, all that matters to Mushu right now is that she’s out for a walk and has company! She is very friendly and definitely holds no grudges against people, despite apparently not being valued by some. She wags her tail throughout our walks and often looks up to check in. Mushu seems to hold it forever in her cage and is quick to relieve herself outside, so may have housetraining. She LOVES treats and once she knew she could get one for sitting, didn’t want to do much else! When we’ve seen other dogs, she has seemed calmly interested and in playgroup she has been social and polite. The thing that stands out most about her, though, is how loving she is. She is very eager to give hugs, have her back scratched, and give kisses! She isn’t shy about crawling in my lap and maintains a gentleness in all of her displays of affection. Sometimes she needs encouragement to go back in her cage, but she licks my hands after I remove my leash – she is never demanding, and always grateful! This resilient sweetheart would be so happy to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
Another volunteer writes and updates:
Judging by the comments on her walking log, Mushu has a huge fan club of volunteers and staff, and now that I’ve met her I am naming myself the President! I added my comment to the existing ones which read among them: “so sweet”, “great dog”, “a delight”, “all around great dog”, “love her”, and more. So
sweet and gentle, Mushu comes forward to be leashed, her tail wagging as she anticipates a nice outing, and of course the chance to go potty. She loves all people, has been a helper dog to asses incoming dogs, loves a good butt scratch and the only thing better than a belly rub, is a belly rub while holding onto a tennis ball!! Her leash manners are excellent, her gray coat accented with touches of tan (my favorite color combination), and she’s gentle, affectionate, sweetly playful and able to amuse herself with a ball laying down froggy style for a good chomp (but not tearing it apart). Our Divine Miss M has obviously been a mom several times over, but is now spayed and ready to know what it feels like to simply be a cherished pet. Her quiet and gentle personality will make her easy to love; come meet her and see for yourself.
A Staff Member writes:
Mushu looks like she has not had the easiest lot in life, but that hasn’t affected her sweet disposition one bit! She is wiggly, loving, great in playgroup, and loves to give kisses! What more can you ask for? Help Mushu find the loving home she deserves

SAFER:
During intake it was noted that Mushu was very friendly, gentle, and attention seeking. She gave the Admissions Counselor kisses and hugs, and allowed all handling. Mushu was also reported to be tolerant of all handling during her medical exam. During SAFER Mushu had soft/friendly body language when greeting the assessor, and allowed all handling items without issue. She was relaxed during the tag item, and only required a bit of pressure to her cheek to be pushed out of the food bowl during the food item. She only showed minimal interest in the toy items, and was easy to handle when chewing on the rawhides.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, lip long.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.
Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away.
Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Mushu is a social, polite greeter but was a bit nervous with a larger dog but was tolerant with his greeting.
Group Behavior:
When off leash with other dogs, Mushu is very sweet and will whine when seeing other people. She will offer a wagging tail and is very tolerant of the social helper dog greeting her, not really interested in play.
