03/30/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A round-faced little dumpling of a girl and just as sweet as her donut-hole namesake, Munchkin won my vote for ‘Most Endearing’ dog of the day and I’m already envious of the lucky adopter who’ll get to spend a lifetime enjoying her quiet affection. Munchkin came to the Care Center with her sister Allium (A1031380) when their owner was evicted and as a somewhat shy, middle-aged lady she is not enjoying this abrupt change in her living situation one bit. While she likes getting out for walks and waits eagerly at her door, when a stranger with a scary leash comes calling she cowers in fear and only the lowering of the rope and an offer of tasty treats will bring Munchkin back to the front of her den. It takes a few tries for me to ‘lasso’ her but once leashed she proves a great walker; hopping out of her kennel, climbing the stairs with ease and taking care of all her business in the yard. I let her trail the rope around for a bit so she can take her own time approaching me and within minutes she’s soliciting attention, we’ve swapped her leash for a jaunty scarf and our photo shoot is in full swing! Munchkin’s happy for me to pet her all over, she looooves a good behind-the-ear massage and she’ll even let me kiss her head as I snap a quick selfie. When I sit down on a bench and call her name, she quickly trots over and nuzzles her head against my legs to request even more snuggles! If this Bulldog beauty had a tail to wag it would surely be swinging as she greets a four-legged friend through the fence and her happy enthusiasm when we share a game of chase would make any low-rider fan smile. When it’s time to go back inside I have no problems re-leashing her and we make a pit stop on the way so she can receive some ear drops. Munchkin allows me to hold her floppy ears out while grudgingly accepting her medicine from the vet and then to my surprise, hops right back into her kennel without complaint. She may be timid at first but this girl’s big heart is so worth the winning and once she trusts you there’s no limit to the depths of her love and loyalty. Take home a real sweetheart by stepping up for Munchkin today!
03/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Munchkin was a bit difficult to remove from her kennel with a fearful body language at the back of the cage. Once she was out Munchkin walks with a fearful body language; she is scared of any noise in the shelter. During the assessment she was uncomfortable with handling she does his best to look small, his body looks hunched, and her ears flattened back. Munchkin looks directly at the assessors and continues to cower but at the same time she snaps quickly at the assessor during the handling, and then she retreats away from the assessor. For safety reason we skip the handling part of the assessment. During the resources Munchkin did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. She does not show any interest in the toy or rawhide. Munchkin does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. The behavior department feels that she would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. Dog snap. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. Helper: A1027455
