10/12/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Mountain is a big mush! He arrived as a stray surrender with two female dogs, all looking the worse for wear. Still, he is big, handsome, and has the sweetest spirit! He is usually in a hurry to go outside and can pull strongly, but once we get there he is easily handled. He seems to have housetraining and knows “sit.” He LOVES treats and does an endearing tap dance with his two front paws as he waits for them. He has a way of holding his mouth closed such that a bit of his bottom gums peeks out in the middle — it is so cute! Mountain is super wiggly and affectionate. He’s quick to put his paw on my lap, isn’t afraid of kissing on a first date, and is always attentive. When I bring him in the yard he is easily engaged and entertained; he didn’t seem to know what to make of the tennis ball I threw his way, but he doesn’t need toys to have fun — he will play-bow and gallivant around with only the slightest vocal encouragement. I’m pretty sure anywhere is better than where he came from, but Mountain deserves the very best home! He would be so happy to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
09/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog: A1041538 Mountain came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Mountain came into the assessment room with loose body posture, he was social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Mountain was distracted but not fearful during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Mountain eats faster and takes bigger bites with tense body language but did not escalate, toy item he showed no interest and rawhide item he takes away body between the handler and the item. Due to Mountain taking bigger bites and eating faster with tense body language, the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral.
