09/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s time to associate Monterey not only with fine wine, but also fine dogs! Monterey has the sweetest lightly frosted face and it lights up with his unbridled smile (it makes him channel a pup!). He makes soft eye contact and it’s hard to resist his tiny eyebrows. He barks in his cage for attention, but once outside it’s clear he seems to hold it forever in his cage and he is likely housebroken. He is easy to handle on leash and already knows some commands! As soon as he caught a whiff of the treats in my back pocket Monterey was ready to work for them; he knows “sit,” “down,” and will offer his paw. When I bring him in the yard he sometimes seems a little anxious about the environment he finds himself in, not staying in one place long like he is looking for something, but remains VERY wiggly and sweet with me. He’ll prop his paws on me and let me rub under his chin and one of his “down”s nearly turns into a belly rub – what a love! He does adorable head tilts when I try to entice him in a squeaky toy, runs after it when I throw it, but isn’t interested enough to pick it up. He may be a little lost, but he seems so happy to have company…and he is wonderful company to keep! Could you be what he’s looking for? Monterey would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
09/18/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Monterey came to us as a stray on 9/16/15. He can be seen hard barking in the kennel but allowed to be taken out and relaxed once out of the kennel. Monterey became very uncomfortable in the assessment room when approached by one of the assessors and lunged toward her. When he lunged he managed to place his teeth on the assessor’s hand (did not break skin) with tense body language. Due to this even another assessor was brought into the room to try and start the assessment. When the other assessor entered Monterey immediately lunged toward the assessor as well. The assessor was able to get control of Monterey and begin the actual assessment. Monterey was very hard to position but allowed the assessor to conduct the Look item while maintaining relaxed body language. At the start of the sensitivity test Monterey became very stiff and uncomfortable coming to a freeze while giving the assessor whale eye. At this point the assessment was stopped as to not further stress out Monterey further. Monterey growled during at the assessor during the toy test, and had very stiff body language during the food test as well, but did not snap at or bite the assess-a-hand. The behavior department believes that placement with a rescue would be best that can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address Monterey’s behavior issues and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 5. Dog freezes. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy 1: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Monterey hard barks and lunges at the gate so he is muzzled. Once in the pen, he is very forward when approaching the helper dog and briefly attempts to sniff. He then jumps on the helper dog’s back, pins them and growls but does retreat when corrected by handlers.
09/17/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Monterey hard barks and lunges at the gate so he is muzzled. Once in the pen, he is very forward when approaching the helper dog and briefly attempts to sniff. He then jumps on the helper dog’s back, pins them and growls but does retreat when corrected by handlers. 9/18 update: Monterey again is over aroused when greeting at the gate, so he is muzzled. He is forward upon introduction; but slows down the the helper dog walks away. He is tolerant of solicitation and will approach to sniff, but then rushes into the helper dog, pins her to the ground and does not relent until handler correction is offered.
