Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Missy is described by her former owner as playful and loving, relaxed with kids, un-reactive around cats, and anxious around other dogs (may lunge at larger dogs). Her owner notes that she is generally mellow but may snap when afraid. She allowed her owner to touch her food bowl but would growl if anyone else approached while she was eating, and will growl over toys and treats. She does have a bite history, reported to have bitten someone in 2012, but we have no information about the context, severity, or recipient of this bite. Missy is also noted to enjoy walks on-leash and running in the dog park, as well as playing tug. She is fearful of thunder storms and fireworks, hiding when they occur. Missy is not acclimating well to being in the care center and without her owner. She did not allow handling by the Admission Counselor once the owner left, growling and snapping when leashed. She lunged, alligator rolled, and tried to bite during her initial medical examination. Missy also did not allow handling during the SAFER assessment. She showed signs of fear when approached, lunging and trying to bite when removed from the kennel. Fearful body language continued during the relief walk, and Missy pulled at and bit the leash. Due to this avoidance and distance-increasing behavior, the handling items were omitted from the assessment. Missy was not interested in the toy and did not approach the helper dog. We have seen behavior from Missy in the care center suggesting that she is uncomfortable with new people. Her owner surrender profile indicates a playful and affectionate dog but also acknowledges Missy’s tendency to be fearful and to give warning behaviors in certain situations. Due to our inability to fully evaluate Missy and her avoidance of human interaction, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can get Missy into a stable home environment quickly. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog.
