09/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I was immediately drawn to Mirra. I love the coloring on her face and her sweet eyes. She is very scared and stays curled up on her bed when I approach. To my dismay, she responds to my cooing with a low growl, but nothing beyond that. She flinches a little when I put my leash around her, but comes out easily. She is very shy and nervous, but easy to handle. She walks nicely on leash and accepts my petting, but doesn’t seek it out. Her coat is patchy and itchy. When I bring her into the yard she walks around and whines; it is, of course, heartbreaking to see her so lost and be unable to provide her comfort. She sniffs my treats outside, but will only eat them in her cage when no one’s looking. After several walks, and little progress in breaking through the wall she’s put up, I had resigned myself to the fact that Mirra and I would just have the kind of a relationship where I could be her means to fresh air and a chance to relieve herself (she seems very housebroken). And then on our most recent trip to the yard, I was sitting on the bench, Mirra doing her usual exploring, when she did a little shake and yawn combo; and, to my delight and surprise, approached me and propped her paws on my knees. She stayed there as I petted her, made soft eye contact, and then proceeded to lick my face — almost as if apologizing for the way she acted before, and thanking me for being patient with her. She still whimpered as she gazed outside of the fence, but would hop up at my side when I called to her, take treats from my hand, and even sit for them. When I put her back in her cage, instead of retreating back into her shell, she put her paws on the door, whined and barked at me. Mirra may need some time to warm up, but she is incredibly sweet and well worth it. She is at Brooklyn ACC, waiting for that special person that sees something special in her!

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mirra came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Mirra was anxious but loose for all handling. Mirra Follows the handler with her body low and fearful during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Mirra was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Mirra can be very nervous and skittish at times, she was also uncomfortable during the assessment. Mirra is nervous and trembling throughout the assessment and has a crouched body posture.
