SAFER: AVERAGE HOME
Miley was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. She remained shy during handling; tail tucked throughout, however she had very soft body language and repeatedly wagged her tucked tail. She was a bit nervous while playing tag and was easily distracted, but had soft body language. Miley did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. She had no interest in toys and was easy to handle when chewing on her rawhide.
Miley was brought to the care center as a stray; upon intake, she was able to complete handling. Miley was shy and slightly nervous throughout the assessment, but tried to stay close to the handler and had soft body language throughout. The Behavior Department feels Miley can go to an average home that understands introductions should be done slowly, and Miley should be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Her tail is tucked but wagging.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail tucked with soft body language. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful, easily distracted.
Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Food 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek.
Toy 1. No interest.
Rawhide 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you.
Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Miley greets the other dog politely and may engage in gentle play.
PLAYGROUP: When off leash with other dogs, Miley greets the other dog politely and may engage in gentle play.
Enrichment notes: 8/23: Very nervous, tail tucked or downward wags the whole time. She was very affectionate though, and sought out attention, crawling into my lap and clinging to me for cuddles. She gave kisses and wagged her tail, with very soft eyes and enjoyed the attention. Fearful on leash, hesitant about coming forward and would freeze and need to be coaxed forward. Appears to have mange and had some bugs on her muzzle. Out in pen for about 20 mins.
