Profile: 11/10/15
Basic Information:
Mikey is a male two year old brown Schipperke who was surrendered due to his owner moving into a home that doesn’t accept pets. He was a gift from a family friend and was with his owner since he was a puppy. He is described as as protective, affectionate and playful.
Personality:
Mikey has lived with two adults. Around children he is respectful and will play gently. Around other dogs he is tolerant owner stated he doesnt engage in play; around cats he is respectful. Mikey has been kept only indoors and has only used pee pads. His activity level is described as high, owner stated he is hyper and loves to run around the home.
Behavior:
Mikey is often aggressive towards strangers, owner stated Mikey is very protective and will bark and growl at strangers that come to the home, he will bare his teeth and lunge. Mikey isn’t bothered when his food is touched while eating or when a treat or bone is taken away. When given a bath Mikey will growl and attempt to bite. Owner stated Mikey tolerates limited petting and doesn’t like to be held.
For a new family to know:
Mikey was not walked by owner and has issues with being on a leash, he will struggle and attempt to get off leash. He likes stuffed and squeaky toys and playing chase. When home he tends to stay in his favorite spot, when left alone he will go to the bathroom in the home. When Mikey hears loud noises he will bark and hide. Mikey eats dry food Pedigree brand and is fed three times a day. He usually sleeps in his owners bed.
Upon intake Mikey was tense and had a hard body, he was able to be collared, scanned and photographed.
Behavior:
Mikey previously lived with two adults and has been around children and cats. The owner stated Mikey is respectful and will play gently around children and he is tolerant and respectful towards cats and other dogs but he doesn’t engage in play. The owner mentioned Mikey is wee-wee pad trained and has a high activity level. It was reported by the owner Mikey is often reactive towards strangers, he will bark, growl, bare his teeth and lunge at them and when attempting to give him a bath he will growl and tries to bite.
At intake it was reported Mikey was nervous with tense body posture, he did allow all handling. During SAFER Mikey came into the assessment room nervous and alert, he was not interest in the assessor, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Mikey bared his teeth and tried to bite at the assessor on the Look item. He displayed no interest in any of the resource items during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
Look: 5. Dog bares teeth and tries to bite.
Toy 1: No interest.
Group Behavior:
When off leash with other dogs, Mikey is nervous and may allow the dogs to sniff him briefly but mostly avoids interaction.
11/12 update: Mikey is nervous but will sniff the other dogs briefly.
