A staff member writes:  Just look at that smile! How can you say no to that smile? Mikey was found as a stray and is now in need of a home! Mikey is missing a large amount of his fur on his back and hind legs. He will need to get to the vet to determine what is causing his hair loss. Help this happy little guy today!

A staff member also writes:  Mikey is a male Pekingese mix who is approximately 7 yrs. old. Mikey has wisps of brown and black fur but is furless on his main body for the most part. Mikey was initially nervous when he entered ACC today due to the fact that it is a strange new environment. As Mikey became more comfortable and relaxed he allowed himself to be collared and photographed with minimal effort. Mikey will need to take his time to adjust to his new environment and will initially be nervous. When comfortable Mikey demonstrates that he can be friendly curious and well behaved.

SAFER: EXPERIENCED HOME, NO CHILDREN

Mikey came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake Mike was nervous at first then after a while he got comfortable and became relaxed. During SAFER Mikey came into the assessment room nervous, he had fearful body language when interacting with the assessor. During look item he was stiff and fearful, sensitivity Mikey had tense body language with his tail tucked, tag-interaction he follows the assessor with his body soft, when the first paw squeeze was attempted Mikey moved his paw away, so flank was attempted with no response. During resources portion of the assessment on food item Mikey had stiff body language and did not lift his head when removing the food bowl. Due to some concerns with Mikey being very fearful, the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter with no children. Mikey has been showing fearful behavior. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Mikey is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Mikey be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace.

Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed.

Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.

Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is stiff, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw

Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all.

Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek.

Toy 1: No interest.

Rawhide: 1. No interest.

Dog-to-dog: When off leash Mikey greets appropriately and is a bit sexually motivated. He is not interested in playing but he does explore the yard.

PLAYGROUP:  Off leash Mikey greets appropriately and is a bit sexually motivated. He is not interested in playing but he does explore the yard.  7/23 update:  Mikey continues to greet appropriately but doesn’t seem interested in playing. He is a bit sexually motivated and does handle corrections appropriately.  7/24 update:  Mikey continues to be sexually motivated, but does greet appropriately. Handles corrections appropriately. 7/25 update:  Mikey continues to greet politely. Sexually motivated and mainly wanders the yard.
