07/15/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Have you ever been so scared that you are frozen in place? It’s over quickly and you move on. Unfortunately, little Mike’s reality right now is such an overwhelming fear that he can’t move on and he’s frozen in place. Found by the police tied up , and wrapped in some sort of tape, it will take a while for him to regain his equilibrium. I met him when he was snoring sound asleep on a blanket under the shelter manager’s desk. He woke when he heard me, but was clearly uncomfortable with the thought of being touched so I didn’t. We just chatted. He allows himself to be hugged and kissed by the person he knows, but doesn’t reciprocate any affection. As I watch him I’m struck by how handsome he is, his coat a shiny brindle, his face chiseled and even in fear it’s easy to see how soft it should be and how handsome he is. He was carried outside by the behavior team in the hopes that being with another dog would make him more comfortable, but he quickly moved into a corner of the pen and stayed there. Mike hasn’t shown any aggression through his fear, but rather a tendency to evade, making himself small under the desk, going to a corner in the backyard pen….if he’s small enough and no one can see him nothing will hurt him anymore….. There are no outward physical signs of trauma in Mike, but the inside scars are clearly deep and at this point hard to penetrate. He needs a quiet place to relax and feel safe with a person who understands that Mike needs to do this by himself under his own timetable. He will do it……we know he will and we are rooting for him. We can only guess at the past that caused this fear, and can work towards a future of happy tail wags and a big smile. Little Mike is worth the effort.
07/13/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mike came to our center after being found tied up in the street. He was too fearful to walk and needed to be carried. Mike’s body was trembling throughout SAFER assessment. He allowed all handling, tense body, extremely fearful and shut down. Mike allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail tucked, head down. He accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth closed, stiff and fearful, tail very tucked underneath him, body very low. Mike was very shut down during Tag game, did not engage or move at all, frozen with fearfulness, no movement at all, but did not respond to any of the passes. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, not moving at all. Mike showed no interest in Food, Toys, or Rawhide. During off leash time with other dogs, he remained in one corner and was not social with any other dogs. Mike only attempted to walk when he was trying to find somewhere to hide. The Behavior Team feels Mike would do best with an Experienced adopter with No Children that has experience with extremely fearful dogs. He may benefit from a quiet, calm, structured environment where he knows what to expect so he can attempt to relax. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched, crouching, long lip.. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog does not pull paw back, stiff. Food: No interest Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-to-Dog: When off leash with other dogs Mike is fearful and uncomfortable. He lies in the corner making himself small when the helper dog greets him; occasionally raising his head to greet her. He eventually stands up to explore pen but does return to the corner to lie back down.
