06/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Move over Magic Mike, there’s a hot new hunk in town! He garners compliments wherever he goes. At first, Mike comes across as a tough guy in his kennel. He clearly doesn’t want to know me… or does he? We start with treats. Mike takes them nicely through the door — good boy! Then I move on to clean-up. He lets me slip his dirty bedding out and replace it with a cushy duvet. I leash him and Mike quickly hops out of his den, eager to get this new adventure on the road! He’s a bit frantic in his enthusiasm at being free but quite responsive too. When I stop to sit on a bench he doesn’t mind and comes over to gently sniff my lap and hands. Though hand-shy at first, we work our way up his body petting to full rub-a-dub massage mode. Soon he’s even letting me reach over to clean his eyes. I can softly lay an arm across Mike’s shoulder for photos. When he sees a tiny terrier his tail wags so happily. It’s no surprise that he’s very reluctant to return to his kennel but as soon as the door closes behind him Mike turns around with a smile and a happy tail. I’ve found my new BFF! In an experienced family with a committed teacher to guide him and gentle hands to let him know he is safe and loved, I truly believe Mike will blossom into a wonderful pet. TLC, patience and treats are all he asks. A volunteer updates: What a difference a few days make! I love it when a dog proves me right and Mike has blossomed into such a happy, playful and sociable boy you’d never guess he was ever anything but eager to come out for a walk, thrilled to play with a ball or keen to be petted and fussed over. His gorgeous smile is like pure sunshine and he’s so excited to see his fellow dogs, greeting them at the fence with pleasant good manners and plenty of joyful tail wags. When it came to sharing his resources and doggie socializing Mike did very well on his behavior assessment so it’s no surprise that he never guards his tennis ball and always drops it quickly after fetching — this guy is the perfect play partner! Come on in to our Manhattan Care Center to meet Mike, the next great love of your life.
06/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mike pulls hard on the leash. He was tense during handling, with a stiff body language. He became stiff and uncomfortable during paw handling. Mike was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Mike was not interested in toys or rawhide. He approaches helper dog, with his tail well above spine level, body not stiff, ears forward. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. We also recommend a home without children.9 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 3. Dog stands tall and square. His tail perpendicular to spine, mouth closed for the majority of assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while moving hip away. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward. Helper:A1033946
