11/28/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When I looked at Linus in his kennel, I saw a very scared dog who, although was lying up front in his kennel, tried to make himself look small so he wouldn’t be noticed. I did notice him, he’s gorgeous, and the nervous dogs always grab my heart. He let me leash him and out we go. To say that he pooped and peed as if he had been saving it up for a special occasion would be an understatement. He’s seems very housetrained and did not soil his kennel as badly as he needed to go. Linus’s coat is shiny and clean but he has a couple of cuts that look like he might have gotten caught on a fence or something. They’ll heal, no biggie. Off leash in a pen he comes when I call him, and only after I invited him onto the bench with me did he come. At first he sat with his back to me, and very slowly began to turn so that he was sitting next to me looking in my direction. I pet him slowly, and although he was still nervous he allowed it, and even at one point gave me a quick kiss. In group play he was tolerant of other dogs, but is not engaging at this point. He’s consistent, as that’s his behavior with people too. With shy and nervous dogs we measure our success one baby step at a time, and Linus made several baby steps yesterday. He’s clearly a dog who wants to be friends but is scared of this busy, noisy place that isn’t his home. A slow approach, a soft voice and a gentle hand will bring out the best in Linus and I can’t wait for it to happen. Will you help him on his way? A volunteer updates: I was so happy to see Linus walking with another volunteer, tail wagging gently. Although still a bit shy he’s made enormous progress in a short time in a difficult environment. Coming forward in his kennel to be leashed he steps out easily and we’re off to the park. Linus looks around as we walk…. for his people perhaps? When we stop to sit together he cries from time to time and I promise him that he’ll have a new family or person to love soon. He’s gorgeous, shy and sweet and his heart beats quietly as he patiently waits. Help my promise to him come true as this shy, gentle little boy wants nothing more than someone to love. Like the character after which he was named, he’s looking for his comfort in the form of a person. I hope that’s you.
11/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Linus is fearful of the shelter environment he walks with a low and fearful body language. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Linus had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Linus is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Linus is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. When off leash with other dogs, Midnight is nervous while in the yard. He is tolerant of greeting and approach, does not engage further. 11/24: Linus continues to display nervous behavior in the yard, but allows greeting. 11/24 update: Linus is nervous but does allow greeting before roaming the yard.
