A Staff member writes: This little guy is definitely getting a lot of interest from adopters, but he’s feeling a bit anxious. Feedback from Mick’s foster indicates that he suffers from separation anxiety and needs training before he’ll be ready to find his forever home. Please help set him up for success!
BEHAVIOR
Mick came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake Mick was calm and quiet and allowed all handling. During SAFER Mick came into the assessment room calm and a bit shy, he was a bit social towards the assessor, look and sensitivity item he was fearful with tense body language, during tag-interaction Mick was fearful with his body low. When the first paw squeeze was attempted he quickly pulled back his paw and on the second paw squeeze he didn’t respond showing no signs of aggression. He showed no interest in any of the resource items. During dog to dog interaction he approached the helper dog with confidence and he was also vocal. Due to some concerns with Mick showing fearful behavior, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Mick be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace. So the behavior department feels Mick can be suitable for an experience adopter.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and fearful.
Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back.
Food: 1. No interest
Toy 1: No interest.
Rawhide: 1. No interest.
Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Mick is social and greets other dogs politely.
Group Behavior:
When off leash with other dogs, Mick is social and greets other dogs politely.
8/6 update: Mick is anxious and may greet other dogs briefly but is more interested in interacting with the handlers.
8/7 update: Mick is anxious. He does not show interest in interacting, and will vocalize and whine will attempting to interact with the handler.
