07/18/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Can our Mick strum a guitar, sing and dance around a stage? No he can’t. But, our Mick can cuddle in your lap, give you kisses and flop over for a belly rub… and what can be better than that? He’s an adorable little guy, compact and fabulous in his gleaming jet black coat. A bit shy at first, he warms up in no time and we head out the door. Pulling on the leash initially until he goes potty (yep, he’s housetrained), he then settles into a gorgeous walk/glide in perfect rhythm with me. Ignoring other dogs we pass his tail wags gently as we go. Off leash in the back yard he sits by me, rubbing himself against my legs, giving himself a massage (too cute!) and then flops right over for a belly rub all fours in the air. Cuddly and sweet, when right side up he drapes himself in my lap and steals a couple of kisses. He has an adorably schmushy little face that you want to kiss all over (and I did!). He’s a nice size, small enough for any living situation, and the perfect combination of a touch of independence plus kissing, lap draping, belly rubbing affection. Tell Mick Jagger he can keep his guitar, and come meet our Mick today!
07/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mick came to our center when a member of the public found him as a stray. Finder states he froze with tail tucked when first approached, but when spoken to in a calm voice he warmed up and allowed petting. It is reported by staff that Mick was nervous and cautious in the yard, but warmed up and allowed petting after about 15 minutes. He walked nicely on leash for his relief walk, no pulling, cautiously looking around. Mick was uncomfortable with tactile portions of the SAFER assessment, licking his lips, whale eye and trembling during Look item, but allowed his head to be cupped, eyes averted. He stood trembling during Sensitivity item, tail tucked, body cautious, ears back. Mick was fearful and unresponsive to the assessor during Tag game, body low. He stiffened at paw Squeeze, so item was moved to flank, where Mick had no response. He had no interest in Food, Toy, or Rawhide. Due to his nervousness and cautiousness, the Behavior Team feels Mick would do best with an Experienced adopter with no Young Children. Any older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. Mick needs time to warm up to his new surroundings and may do best in a calm, quiet, structured home so he knows what to expect and can relax. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, trembling. His tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, trembling, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food: No interest Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest.
