11/16/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/16/15 13:01 Basic information: Haze is a 8 year old male pit bull who had to be surrendered because his previous owner is moving and isn’t allowed pets. His previous owner has had him since he was 7 months and got him from his previous owner. He has no known injuries or health problems but has never been to the vet. The two things his previous owner liked most about him were; he’s affectionate and loves to cuddle. Social Life and Personality: Around children 2 through 10 years Haze is relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant but gentle. He is also relaxed and playful around other poodles and Chihuahuas. Around cats he is respectful. He is house-trained and rarely has accidents in the home. He was kept indoors only and has a medium activity level. He can be described as playful, pushy, confident, excitable, affectionate and friendly. Behavior: Haze has never bitten a person or animal. If he is eating and his food bowl is touched he has a relaxed body and continues eating at the same pace. His previous owner has never attempted to take away his toy or treat while eating or playing. He isn’t bothered if he is pushed off the furniture, if his nails are trimmed, if he is held/restrained or if he is disturbed while sleeping. He is friendly if he is given a bath, if his coat is brushed, and is an unfamiliar person approached his previous owner. If someone unfamiliar approached his previous home he would bark to alert his owner and was friendly. For a New Family to Know: Haze knows how to sit, lay down, come, stay, up and move on command in both English and Spanish. For exercise he went on brisk walks twice a day. He liked to play with balls and squeaky toys and his favorite games to play are fetch and tug. He was not crate trained but has been in a crate and doesn’t do well. When his previous owner was home he would tend to follow them around and when left alone he is well-behaved. He has never been off leash outside. During storms, fireworks or loud noises Haze is nervous. He ate both wet and dry Wellness organic and Alpo and at night he slept next to his owner’s bed.
11/18/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Gorgeous, affectionate and as smart as they come, platinum-coated Maze is the kind of unassuming guy whose hidden depths draw you in like a magnet–the more you learn, the more you love! Since tender puppyhood he’s known only one family and one way of life and the sudden change from beloved, sociable pet to being kenneled all alone has left our sensitive hunk feeling a wee bit sad and shy. But a little TLC goes a long way and before our date is over, Maze is leaning deep into my legs for snuggles and accepting kisses and compliments like he was born to them. Surrendered to our care due to housing issues, Maze is EVERYTHING a great family pet should be, he ticks all the right boxes and then adds a few extras you never even knew you were missing! He’s spent time with children from 2 to 10 years old and is said to be relaxed and playful around them, the perfect mix of gentleness and exuberance, and we’re told he loves other dogs too. Poodles and Chihuahuas were his previous pals but those happy good manners seem to extend to every dog he sees and it’s big smiles and tail wags all round whenever any four-legged friends pass by. Maze gets along with cats and is said to be calm and respectful of feline acquaintances, a true gentleman with the consistently pleasant manners of every discerning dog lover’s dreams. He’s a nice leash walker who’s responsive, seemingly house trained and very easy to handle and we’re told he has no issues being bathed, brushed or having a mani-pedi either…what, you thought those manly good looks just maintained themselves?! A bilingual boy, Maze is said to understand sit, lay down, come, stay and move in both English and Spanish and I’m sure he’d be proud to show off all his best tricks for his lucky new forever family. When asked what he liked most about Maze, his former owner chose ‘affectionate and loves to cuddle’ but there are a hundred and one things to adore about this wonderful guy and just imagine what fun you’ll have deciding on your own favorite. Pets with his kind of social ‘pedigree’ come along but once in a lifetime so put on your running shoes and hurry into our Manhattan Care Center for a fabulous date with handsome Mr. Maze today!
11/18/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maze walks calmly on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Maze had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. Maze was surrender to us. According to his previous owner Maze Around children is relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant but gentle. He is also relaxed and playful around other poodles and Chihuahuas. Around cats he is respectful. He is house-trained and rarely has accidents in the home. If he is eating and his food bowl is touched he has a relaxed body and continues eating at the same pace. His previous owner has never attempted to take away his toy or treat while eating or playing”. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Maze is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Maze is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1. No interest. When off leash with other dogs, Maze is tolerant of greeting, but mostly ignores the greeter dog. He appears anxious and distracted.
11/17/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Maze offers polite greeting and engages in brief play with female dogs. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog during off leash interaction time. Based on observations made here at our care center, the behavior department recommends that Maze may be placed into a home with a gently playful or tolerant female dog. A pre-adoption interaction is recommended before placement into a home with a male dog. When off leash with other dogs, Maze is tolerant of greeting, but mostly ignores the greeter dog. He appears anxious and distracted. 11/18: Maze engages in brief bouts of play when solicited. 11/19: Maze greets politely, keeps to himself. 11/20 update: Maze greets politely and attempts to solicit play from the female dog, but becomes anxious and attempts to exit when she does not engage. When the other dog does solicit he will briefly engage with her.
