06/11/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Maya is a prettty young girl who seems to have been well cared for by her former owner. She looks healthy, very well nourished and dressed in a lovely fawn coat. Her eyes are intense, focused..She knows what she wants..company, treats and a ball game. She is really good, jumping quite high for roast beef that she takes rather gently from my hand after sitting upon request… She is all excited seeing the tennis ball. Her eyes are sparkling. She leaps for it and never ever fails to catch it…Yes, Maya loves to play but she never guards even her most precious possessions, a rawhide, a toy or a ball…..She is quite a smart girl. She pulls a little on the leash in her excitement to be out of her kennel and meet the world. She does not seem to mind two large dogs roaming in a pen. She even goes and says hello…She has an eye for the pigeons, though. Maya is a sociable dog who comes when called and sits on the bench for bonding. She enjoys caresses and kisses and licks my hand, may be as a thank you for being together…She is with us after a incident involving biting a little dog. Maya should probably be adopted out to a single dog home or one with a large dog she can make friends with. Maya is at the Manhattan Care Center and waiting for her time to shine in your loving and experienced hands.
05/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maya pulls a bit on leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. Maya was calm and relaxed during handling. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Maya was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language. She was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Maya did not show any concern during the behavior assessment but because of an incident that she had with another dog in the past. During the dog interaction in the shelter Maya has relaxed body language. Her muscles are relaxed, her tail and ears are held in their natural positions the muscles in her face are relaxed, his mouth was slightly opened. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. she does not place her body between you and the rawhide. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper: A1037731
06/16/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION

When off leash with other dogs, Maya is muzzled due to her history. Once in the pen, she is tolerant of being sniffed and may briefly sniff the other dog but is very focused on the muzzle.
