08/20/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/20/15 17:48 Basic Information Maximus McNeil is a 2 1/2 year American Staffordshire that is being surrendered due to landlord issues. Max was purchased from a breeder at 6 weeks old. Client left Max in a backyard at a friend’s home for the past five months while trying to find him for new home (he previously lived in the home before the move), but felt all of the inquirers were not ideal and wanted Max to not have to live outside any longer. Max saw a vet a year ago and the only health issues noted were bites from flies while living outside. Social Life and Personality Max was raised with small chlidren as a puppy and enjoys playing/interacting with chidlren of all ages. He has lived with a newborn, 3, 4, and 5 year old. Max was also raised with a large cat that he was very respctul towards. The cat has even scratched Max in the face (not within 10 days) and Max would sit there and not react. Max has only interacted with a female adult dog when he was 8 months old and the female bit him as Max tried to mount her. Max cried and retreated, but did not try to bite. Owner states that Max’s body language will match other dogs while on a walk (if they are soft, he remains soft and if they get stiff he will become stiff). Max has a medium energy level in the home and is house broken. Behavior: Max will allow his owner to touch his food and treats, but not strangers. When strangers attempt to touch his bowl he will get stiff and growl. He will allow anyone to play with his toys and will play growl during tug of war. He will only get on furniture when prompted and will easily get off when asked. Max will bark when strangers approach the door or yard, but will remain soft body and will greet as long as the person is approaching in a friendly manner. If someone comes into the home very confrontational he will get stiff and growl. Max has never bit anyone. For a New Family to Know: Max knows the commands sit, come, down, and roll over. He has learned stay, but has not mastered it. Max was exercised by playing in the back yard and long walks. He loves rope toys, balls, and stuffed toys (but he destroys them). His favorite game is tug of war with ropes. Max was never crate trained, but he does not destroy household items when left alone. He enjoys staying in his favorite spot(his bed) when the family is home. When off leash, he comes back when called if in the yard. He has never been off leash in a public place. Max was free fed Puppy Chow.

08/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Max McNeil was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. He was calm and relaxed during handling. He was calm and relaxed when playing tag with assessor but began mouthing the leash. Max was stiff and cannot be pushed out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He kept a firm grip on the toy and became stiff, but had no interest in rawhide. Max McNeil was surrendered to the care center by his owner of 2 years due to housing issues. It was reported that Max was raised with children from newborn age, to 5 years old, he enjoys playing/interacting with children of all ages. He also lived with a cat that he was very respectful of. Max’s owner states that Max’s body language will match other dogs while on a walk. It was also reported Max will allow his owner to touch his food and treats, but when strangers attempt to touch his bowl he will get stiff and growl; he got stiff during the food test during the assessment but did not growl. It was also reported that if someone is confrontational in the home he will get stiff and growl, but has never bit anyone. Due to Max McNeil’s potential to become possessive over resources, the Behavior Department feels he would do best if placed with an experienced home with no young children that is comfortable monitoring and positively modifying and guarding behaviors that may manifest in the home. He may also benefit from obedience classes to help correct leash mouthing behaviors if they manifest in the home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, mouths the leash. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog licks hand. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy 1: 3. Dog keeps a firm hold on toy. His body is stiff. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Max Mcneil is nervous, tolerates brief sniffing and may sniff the other dog in return but mostly avoids interaction.
