07/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Max was sound asleep in his kennel when I first met him and looked like he had to catch up with much needed rest. I talked to him, petted his silky head and he followed me, walking nicely on the leash and eliminating as soon as we reached the street. What a beautiful dog he is, dotted with sweet baby blue eyes! What a poor physical shape, though. Much too thin, shaved by inexperienced hands (before arriving at the care center) leaving areas of excoriated skin, a major ear infection (that we are treating)… poor Max. He really needs a caring and loving new human ASAP. Free in a pen, he moves and smells a lot the area without marking. A new place, new people. That must be a bit unsettling. Max holds no grudge for his dismal condition. Shy at first, he knows quickly his friends, comes when called and wags his tail, seeking caresses. He is a really gentle dog not treated well by life. Well, it is not too late to turn the page. Now is the time to give Max the make over he deserves and get him back to the shape he should be in. Well cared for and loved, Max in his new lush cream and honey coat, will be the talk of the town and a wonderful forever best friend. Come and meet Max very soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
06/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Max is fearful of the shelter environment he walks with a low and fearful body language. Max was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. He had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. Max did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Max does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. This dog is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up and an adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food. No interest. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. Helper:A1040685
