SAFE – 04/27/15
A volunteer writes; Max must wonder what he is doing in a kennel when days ago, he lived on a farm with kids, a cat and a Newfie….He stays put, quietly or whimpers, softly. I caress his nose through his door, say an encouraging word and Max is leashed in no time. He walks very nicely, eliminating as soon as we reach the yard. He poses very calmly for the pictures. He is an excellent model. Max is a beauty, tall, healthy and clad in an absolutely gorgeous fox red long coat. He has been outstandingly cared by his former owners who relinquished him as they moved to a small place in the city. Max indeed is used to the great outdoors and would be afraid of certain people like very tall men. His family did not think he would thrive in such a new environment and this is why Max is with us at the Manhattan Care Center. Max is indeed shy and a bit uncomfortable but it is perfectly understandable. He has been sociable with staff, is friendly with me, accepts nicely my treats and welcomes my caresses. He seems to like other dogs and has mingled timidly in playgroups with his kind. Max would love children, knows a number of commands and tricks. He would be very playful, well mannered and loving. I can easily believe this. His behavioral evaluation is almost perfect but shows that Max needs a reassuring environment to thrive. In a nutshell, Max is one of a kind and magnificent canine who might have some fears(like very tall men) but is overall a very good boy who will make a new master or family very happy and proud to own him as a forever best friend. Come and meet Max soon and take him home.

04/12/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/12/15 08:51 Basic Information Max is a 4 year old, neutered rough collie/shepherd mix that was adopted as a puppy from another shelter. His owner moved from a rural setting to a city and is unable to accomodate Max’s fear of stangers in his apartment. Social Life Max has grew up with children (currently 6 and 8) and also interacts with their friends frequently. Max is very gentle with children and loves to take treats from their hands and perform tricks. He has also lived with a cat for two years that he ignored and an one year old newfie mix that he played with constantly. Owner states that Max lives indoors, but loves to expolre the acres of land on the farm during the day. He has medium energy level in the home. Behavior Max allows his owner and children to take treats, toys and food from him without a problem. He is also tolerant of baths and nail trims. Max will bark in the home if anything approaches such as wildlife and people. Owner reports that he is very wary of larger male strangers and will low growl while backing away. This was seen in the Admissions Center when Max saw a larger male outside the window. The owner states that he usually rolls Max on his back into a submissive pose when he does this behavior. Max has never attempted to lunge towards a person and has never bit anyone. For a New Family to Know Max knows the commands sit, stay, come, high five and paw. He demonstated high five in the Admissions Center with staff. Max is also house broken and will let his owner know he has to go by poking his arm with his nose. Max loves hard squeaky toys and chew bones. He is not afraid of loud noises and does not engage in destructive chewing. Max will come when called off leash. He is free fed Costco brand dry food and his owner states he is not a picky eater. Behavior During Intake Max was panting, whining and pacing at first during intake. He low growled at a staff member but once she presented him with treats, he took them from her hand. He even gave her a high five on command. Once his owner left, he allowed all handing and was able to be scanned for a mircochip (negative) and collared by both male and female employees

04/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Max came to our center as an owner surrender because his family moved from a farm with alot of room to a small apartment. It is reported that Max is nervous and low growls around strangers, especially tall men. Admissions Counselor saw this behavior displayed upon intake to someone outside the window, but Behavior Team did not see this behavior when walking Max outside for his relief walk past all the employees. It is also reported Max lived with two young children, ages 6 and 8, a large dog that he played with constantly, and a cat whom he ignored. Max allowed all tactile handling during the SAFER assessment and showed no aggressive behaviors. He had a soft body and averted his eyes during Look item. His tail was tucked during Sensitivity but he allowed the touch. Max followed at the end of leash during Tag but did not engage in play, and settled immediately at the end. He had no interest in food, with minimal interest in toys and rawhide. Based on the reported low growling behavior, the Behavior Team feels Max would do best in an Experienced home that can reassure him so he can feel safe and secure in his new environment. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog sniffs and licks hand. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: No interest Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away.
