04/08/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Wow…is Max unbelievably handsome or what?!! That single blue eye and luxuriously spotted coat suggest he’s part Catahoula but as to the rest of the mix? I’m just going to go with hubba hubba hunk! Surrendered to our care after only a few months in the home of his ‘finder’, Max is understandably a little anxious over all the sudden changes in his life but that’s not going to stop him putting on a great big smile and hugging and kissing his way right into your heart. Having lived in happy harmony with 5 other dogs, two adults and two small children, he really knows what it means to party and is always eager to make new friends of both the two- and four-legged variety. While his play style can get pretty boisterous (and in the case of other dogs, pretty loud) it’s all meant in fun and his jumps are really just hugs in disguise – once I hold him close this loverboy all about the smooching and snuggling! Max likes to chase but not retrieve a ball, loooves any toy that squeaks and if he sometimes wants to mouth the leash when it’s time for his walk a firm ‘no’ soon puts a stop to the shenanigans. In his enthusiasm for all those great outdoor smells he does pull at first but he’s responsive and fairly easy to handle in a harness and appears to be extremely house trained, taking care of his business immediately and often. Max knows commands for ‘sit’ and ‘stay’, takes treats sooo gently and enjoys hopping up beside me on the bench for even more cuddle time. And did I mention he aced his behavior assessment too? If your perfect pet must-haves include the phrases ‘insanely good-looking’, ‘super friendly’ and ‘well-trained but eager to learn more’ then Max is more than ready to join your active family today!
04/05/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Max was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up with soft body, tail wagging. He was easily over aroused during tag and began to excessively mouth the leash, repeatedly jumped on the assessor and was difficult to calm; his body remained soft and wiggly throughout. Max did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He kept a firm grip on the toy, but his body remained loose and wiggly and he put body between assessor and rawhide, showing no growling or stiffness. Max was relinquished to care center by a previous owner who stated he lived with two young children that Max loved to be around and got along with. However, the owner did mention that Max may play a bit too rough for children under 5 years old. He lived with five other dogs who the owner stated he got along well with. The previous owners would describe him as a very affectionate and playful dog. During the assessment Max was social toward the Assessor but was easily over excited and would often jump on the Assessor and play a strong game of tug-o-war. He did not resist being handled while eating. Due to his heightened arousal level and the previous owner’s claim, the Behavior Department believes Max would do best in an experienced home with no young children that can provide him with adequate mental and physical stimulation. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog gets easily over aroused, repeatedly jumps on assessor, mouths leash, body remains loose and wiggly, the dog does not calm easily. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide. No growling or stiffness.
