03/28/15 13:00 (Late Entry) NAME Max REASON FOR SURRENDER Owner is moving to a “no pets” residence and can no longer keep Max. RELATIONSHIP Max’s previous owner received him as a gift about 9 months ago and he is currently about 9 months ago. He scanned negative for a microchip. PEOPLE He lives in a home with adults and children. He is usually relaxed or playful around children, and when he plays with them, he is usually exuberant. He usually barks when the strangers approach his house, and is friendly when strangers approach his family. He has never bitten anyone. OTHER ANIMALS He has not lived with other animals, but he has interacted with other dogs. Owner states that he is aggressive toward them and that he growls when he sees other dogs. He has not bitten any other animals. PERSONALITY He is a very active mostly indoor dog who has been described as playful, mellow, sometimes pushy, confident, excitable, and friendly toward people. He enjoys playing with balls, and his favorite game is tug. He usually keeps eating if you touch his food bowl while he is eating. He isn’t bothered if you take a treat away. He is friendly if you take a toy away. He isn’t bothered if you move him off the furniture and usually gets back on. He also isn’t bothered if you trim his nails or if you give him a bath. If you have to hold or restrain him, he moves around a lot and struggles to get free. He usually wants to play if you disturb him while he is sleeping. He likes to follow his owner around when home. He eats Iams wet and dry food and his favorite treats are Beggin Stripes. When he is walked he likes to go potty on the grass. He usually sleeps in his crate. TRAINING He is mostly house-trained and he rarely has accidents. He usually goes to the bathroom on piddle pads as he is usually walked about 3 times a week. He knows sit, get down, stay, and jump up. He usually chews on house-hold items such as shoes when he is home alone and he is never left alone in a yard. He is crate-trained and he usually sleeps in his crate. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE During the intake he was relaxed at first. He had a soft wiggly body and soft eyes and he allowed petting and showed no signs of aggression. He began to bark and growl when I went to scan him, but as soon as the scanning was over, he became soft and wiggly once more.

A volunteer writes: When a smile comes from the heart it really shows and Max has the brightest grin and softest eyes for a reason – he’s a total sweetheart! A little shy at first but quick to warm up with new friends, we’re only outside a minute or two before my handsome date is wagging a happy tail and giving out warm hugs to everyone he sees. He may be built tough but behind those beefcake muscles there’s an affectionate, playful mushball who just loves to socialize and his good-natured manners have already won him quite the fan club at our Care Center. He comes when called, laps up snuggles, sits politely on command and mouths treats gently from an outstretched hand but my favorite ‘Max moments’ are during our games of fetch. He’s a master of the sport and a perfect teammate, sitting to wait for my throw, retrieving promptly and letting me take the ball from his mouth with ease. Sometimes he walks around proudly displaying his prize, occasionally he drops it, but usually he lightly nudges the ball into my legs to beg for another throw and if I sit down he’ll trot over and lay his chin on my lap, cheerfully chomping away as I massage his head and neck. On leash Max is a strong but responsive walker and seemingly quite house trained and despite reports from his former owner that he would growl at other dogs when outside, he passes them with no more than excited pulling. He did well on the dog to dog socialization portion of his behavior assessment but not so well in playgroup and a home where he can be your one and only four-legged friend would suit Max best. We’re told he’s exuberantly playful with children, cool when it comes to bath time and that he’s ‘a good listener’ too – what more could you ask for in a pet? Max is one in a million, a special boy with a beautiful smile and an even more beautiful soul. I love him, our staff loves him and I promise that you’re going to love him too.

03/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Max came to us as an owner surrender as his current owner is moving to a residence that does not allow pets. It is reported he plays exuberantly and barks at strangers. Max was not walked daily in his previous home and is used to going to the bathroom inside on pads, but will go outside when walked. During intake, Max was friendly and allowed petting, but growled at intake counselor during scanning. After scanning was over he resumed soft body and allowed petting once more. Max jumped up and licked the assessor’s face during the Look portion of the SAFER assessment. He accepted all tactile portions with soft body and wagging tail. Max allowed the food dish to be moved forward, but followed it to continue eating. He growled while pushing his cheek out of the food bowl. He kept a firm grip on the Toy and would not relinquish without trading for a treat, but did not growl. He had minimal interest in the rawhide. Max’s owner reports he does not like other animals and will growl at them if he sees them while out walking. During our dog to dog interaction, Max was wagging his tail high above spine level and appeared excited to interact, not aggressive. The Behavior Team feels Max would do well in an Experienced Home with No Young Children due to the growling behavior shown and reported, and any older children should have an in-depth interaction beforehand. Look: 1. Dog leans jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 4. Dog growls. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. He is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, smell, lick, then turns away. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.

04/07/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When greeting at the gate Max will lunge at the helper dog. Due to this and the agression reported by his previous owner, Max was muzzled prior to going into the pen. Once off leash with other dogs, Max continues to lunge at other dogs when they get close.
