A volunteer writes:
Surrendered due to personal problems, when asked what kind of home would be good for Max we were told “a family with children to play with”. Max is a low rider meatball, big in girth on short little legs. Low key, sweet and gorgeous, he showed off his housetraining skills as soon as we were out the door. He lived with two adults, gets along with everyone including children, likes female dogs but not males, is crate trained, housetrained, knows ‘sit’, ‘lie down’, and loves to play fetch. His leash manners are lovely, so easy to walk as he responds to my slightest move. Laying his head in my lap he snorts with pleasure as I caress him, closing his eyes as he gives into my loving, and reaching up to give me some kisses. His tail wags gently as we spend time together… he’s so quietly affectionate and soft I just want to hug him and assure him he’ll have a new family to love. With another dog later in the day, Max is quiet, happy to have company and finally engages in a bit of play. Watching this little meatball play is a delight! Hopping back into his kennel when it was time, he wagged his tail softly as I gave him a kiss goodbye. Max is awesome and is hoping to find a new family to love. Come meet him today.

Max deserves an ode to patience and kindness, or at least his own Thesaurus link to those words. He sits so dearly in his kennel in the hallway, unperturbed by the constant comings and going of other dogs, just waiting for his turn. And his gratitude when it is! He is all kisses and tail wags to people and other canines. He walks so gracefully on a leash, appears house trained, and we cannot imagine a home he would not make better by his loving presence in it. Max was on his way to adoptions and all the attention he deserved but alas has caught a cold so won’t get his star turn, unless a miracle happens and you turn out to be his North, his West, his chance. He deserves it so greatly. Please, come meet Max and open your heart and home to him! We are rooting so hard for him we’re giving the Bronx cheer a run for it’s money!

Hi y’all – I’m Max, affectionately referred to as the little tank. Don’t let my small size fool you – I have a terrific personality, love people and cuddling. I like most dogs and even though I sometimes don’t want to play with every dog I meet, I’m happy to share my space with them. I like treats, giving kisses, walks, being outside to go potty, playing with a ball, eating a treat and snuggling. Some people call me a meatball, a small bulldozer but I’m fine with that as long as they call me. I can be serious if you need me to, like for pictures or something, but I’d rather be smiling and wagging my tail. I’m always happy to make new friends so come meet me and let’s be friends. Maybe even forever? I’d like that.

BEHAVIOR: AVERAGE HOME
Max walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Max was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Max rushed in quickly during the dog-dog test, but showed no aggression.
Max was surrender to us. According to his previous owner he used to live with two adults. The owner mentioned that he is friendly around children and strangers. The owner also stated that “he gets along well with female dogs but does not like male dogs” Max did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze2: 1 . Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek.
Toy 1: No interest.
Rawhide: 1. No interest.
Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip long
