12/12/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/12/15 17:07 BASIC INFO Mavis is a 3 year old female APBT / Am. Staff. Mix. Her family got her from a family member when she was 4 months old. They surrendered her due to landlord conflict. SOCIALIZATION Mavis is friendly/outgoing with new people. She lived with 4 children ages 4-10 and was relaxed, playful, and tolerant with them. She plays gently with children and gently-exuberantly with adults. She lived with her mother and 2 female Chihuahuas. She was relaxed, playful, tolerant, and played exuberantly with all of the other dogs. She has never bit anyone. BEHAVIOR Mavis doesn’t mind storms. She doesn’t mind when someone takes her food/treat/toy, moves her off furniture, holds/restrains her, or wakes her up. She’s friendly with strangers who approach her home/family. She’s nervous when she has baths or nail trims. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Mavis’s family describes her as friendly, affectionate, playful, and high energy. She’s usually mellow, following her family around the home, content to lie next to them while they do something else. When her family gives her attention, she thanks them with lots of kisses and cuddles. She can be excitable when she visits new people/places or when someone initiates play with her. Mavis likes to chew kongs and play fetch and chase. She lived inside and slept with her owners. She ate dry Blue Buffalo food and enjoyed dog treats. She’s housetrained, doesn’t have accidents, and pottied anywhere outside. She’s well-behaved while left alone. She was crated when she was a puppy but doesn’t need to be anymore. She knows sit and down. She went for slow and brisk walks, sometimes pulling on her leash. Off leash, she wanders but comes when called. Mavis rarely barks. INTAKE Mavis approached us and had a loose, wiggly body, and wagging tail during most of her intake and handling-petting, collaring, positioning for pictures, walking on her leash. She retreated from the scanner and became a little tense while her owner scanned her (-). She stood up against the counter briefly and looked at us while we worked at the computer. She put her head in our laps when we pet her. She had dilated pupils with wide eyes. She sometimes had an open mouth and occasionally panted. Mavis looked around a lot and rarely made eye contact with us. Mavis was a little tense while we walked her into her kennel.
12/15/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Mavis is a strong and stocky gal, beautifully cared for, a family pet who lived in harmony with many kids and other dogs including two Chihuahas. Landlord issues…. too many critters in the house . Mavis was owned since tender puppyhood and among the bountiful glowing comments about her, I picked: great with kids, sociable toward strangers, rarely barks, very affectionate and giving lots of kisses. We are told that she is high energy and I certainly can attest to this. As we entered the yard, Mavis picked her own tennis ball and brought it to me, a perfect stranger. Immediate trust. She played and played non stop, often stopping in her course, ball in mouth, tail wagging and begging, it seems, to give her a chase. Mavis is so full of life, so excited to play. She loves treats, can sit for them as well as for the ball. She pulls on the leash and does her business in one stop once we are out of the building. Mavis is gorgeous, healthy, the perfect weight and a magnificent representative of the Pittie breed. She is a family dog, young, loyal, loving , gentle with children, welcoming of strangers and ready to start her life again as your forever best friend . Come and meet Mavis at the Manhattan Care Center.
12/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mavis lived previously with four children ages 4-10, another large dog, and two Chihuahuas, and was relaxed, playful and tolerant with all. Her family describes her as friendly affectionate, playful, and high energy. It is reported she doesn’t mind if you touch her food, toys, treats. Owner reports she is housebroken and potties anywhere outside, and well behaved when left alone. During intake, Mavis had loose, wiggly body and wagging tail, allowed handling but became a bit tense upon scanning. Mavis pulled hard on leash during her relief walk. She was friendly and sociable upon entering the SAFER assessment room. Mavis jumped up to lick assessor’s face during Look item, some displacement scratching. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, open mouth, tail wag, some displacement yawning. She was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, but approached at the end with coaxing. Mavis gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose body. The Behavior Team feels Mavis would do well with an Average adopter. She may benefit from obedience classes to learn better leash manners in regards to pulling. Overall, she appears to be a well rounded dog who was playful with children in her home and lived with dogs of all sizes. Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted, displacement scratching. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth, displacement yawning. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing . she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps 12/19 update: Mavis remains human-social but has begun refusing to return to her kennel, scrambling to escape when placed inside. She shows no aggression whatsoever, even when picked up or held by the collar inside the kennel, but this behavior indicates distress with being returned to her kennel. We feel it is in her best interest to leave the kennel and move into a home environment quickly.
