Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1038892 Matilda came into the care center as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. During her medical exam she was reported to be friendly, but snapped at a technician when handling touching her face. During SAFER Matilda did not solicit attention, but was receptive to attention when given. She was tolerant for most handling, but became stiff and uncomfortable during the paw handling, and lip curled on the first attempt. During the resources portion of the assessment, Matilda also became stiff and lip curled when removing the food bowl, and she snapped at the assess-a-hand when the assessor removed the toys and rawhides. During the dog-dog interaction Matilda approached the helper dog with a relaxed body posture, and appeared to be interested in interacting. Due to the concerns seen while in the care center we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog freezes and lip curls Food: 4. Dog freezes and lip curls. Toy: 5. Dog snaps at assess-a-hand. Rawhide: 5. Dog snaps at assess-hand. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
