TO BE DESTROYED – 06/27/15 Pretty Marlia was surrendered a stray at the NYCACC. She is a cuddly cute eighteen pound Shih Tzu mix, with a pretty black and white fluffy coat. An abdominal mass was discovered during her exams with medical, she will need further attention from a Vet, blood work and more testing is needed. The shelter would like for her to be handled with the watchful eyes of a New Hope rescue. Marlia will be destroyed tomorrow if their requirements are not fufilled. Please share and advocate for her life, she needs to find a foster or adopter by noon tomorrow. Marlia had her SAFER and that shows she would be best in an Experienced home with no small children. She is only six years old, too young to die, please pledge if you can. We must get Marlia the help she needs.

06/26/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Marlia came into the care center as a stray so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She has been social and easy to handle since intake in the care center. She was calm throughout her evaluation and walked nicely on leash. During her SAFER assessment, Marlia allowed all handling items without issue. She was distracted by the environment during tag, but showed no aggression. During the Food item, Marlita followed the bowl when it was removed (though she had not yet started eating); she then began eating, and ate faster after the first cheek push. She growled when the hand was applied to her cheek for the second cheek push. Marlia was not interested in the toy or the rawhide. Due to her behavior with the food bowl and her escalating warnings, we recommend an experienced adopter who can safely manage this behavior should it appear in a home environment. We also recommend a home without children. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back, then lays down. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food: 4. Dog growls. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: In playgroup, marlia has been polite and tolerant with other dogs. She explores the yard.
