***LOVES OTHER DOGS***A volunteer writes “Maria is one of those dogs you can’t help but love, with her soft Staffie face and sweet chocolate drop eyes she’s perfectly designed to bring out the ‘awwww’ in all of us. But don’t let that demure expression fool you, no one is more lively than this little munchkin and whether she’s wiggling her way around the yard, chasing a ball, eating a snack or briefly enjoying my petting before dashing off to explore some more, Maria’s little legs are always on the go! She’s a strong walker but easy to handle once in harness and seems to be quite house trained too, ‘going’ immediately and often. Maria likes socializing with people but she LOVES meeting fellow dogs and will get up on her hinds to watch them pass by or run over to greet them when they stop in the pen next door, her long tail wagging so fast it’s almost a blur. An adoptive family where she has some furry siblings (or just plenty of play dates) would be ideal and a great way for this tiny dynamo to burn off some of her playful puppy energy. Maria spreads fun and laughter wherever she goes, ask for her at our Manhattan shelter and bring the party home with you today! “.

04/13/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maria pulls slightly on the leash. Dog was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. She was calm and relaxed during handling and allowed for all tactical handling items to be completed with ease. Maria followed at the end of the leash during tag, her body remained soft and she calmed quickly. Maria showed some concerning behavior during the food bowl test – stiffening and growling, but did not snap at or bite the assess-a-hand. She had minimal interest in toys and although she did not settle with the rawhide she did growl when the Assessor went to take it away. Maria came to the care center as a stray. Her founder described her as a very active dog that enjoys playing. During the assessment she was social toward the Assessor and was easy to position throughout handling. Maria showed potential to guard food and we would recommend an experienced adopter with no children who would be comfortable safely managing and positively modifying this behavior if it manifests in the home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food 4. Dog freezes and growls. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide 4. Dog growls. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
